Can you replace the locking wheel nut key?

My locking wheel nut key has broken today. I changed all 4 EAS bags following Keith's guide. The rear were rusted in solid and those clips on the front ones are a bugger! To make it easier, I thought I'd try taking the wheel off but the wheel nut key cracked in half!

BTW, the simple (I hoped) job took me 6 hours solid. Including drilling out the rear ones and chiselling off the locking pin on one of them when it snapped! At least the top of the bags were plastic and easy to chisel.

Top tip: drill through the plastic and insert a big screw. Tighten it up until it pushes against the metal above and then it will force the stuck air bag free and out.

Anyway, is it easy to get a replacement key?

Lets hope I don't get a flat in the meantime...

As long as it's the original you're laughing. There's an identification letter stamped into it and they're even available on ebay.

i got a spare 1 off my last p38...forgot to put it in the car when i sold it and they never came back to me,only found it over xmas when sorting me new tool chest
its a letter H still looks new!! and no good to me now. might help someone?

Found the code thanks, it's code I. I've heated it up, straightened it and put a circlip around it and if I can manage to get all 4 wheel nuts off, I'll replace with standard ones instead of locking ones. If it keeps breaking, I'll have to get one...

I emailed Knutsford Landrover to ask them if they could kindly remove my 4 locking wheel nuts and then I would buy 4 standard ones off them to be put in their place.

They sent me a quote for:

4 x £5.44 + vat each

Total, including fitting: £89.11

£89 for 4 standard wheel nuts. Is that a record???

if it keeps breaking then i would think there too tight imo

They keys can be had on the bay for less than a large cuppa liquid turd (also know as Starbucks coffee). Why faff about? Get on t'internet and order yourself a new key.

So this isn't your first locking key that has broken on you? You should already know how easy they are to get hold of.

You're breaking a lot of them you're over tightening them. From what I gathered all you did was try and bodge the old key back together. Of course it is going to break. Unless you're very good with a welder that is just a task that'll end badly.

Not sure what you mean by straightened it up though. It shouldn't be bent. Are we talking about the same thing?

Friend of mine phoned his local friendly computer seller and said he wanted an "...ee , an eye and a pea.." : dealer didn't know what he was talking about : he explained the paint had worn off his "E, I and P " on his keboard and he was looking for spare keys.....he's a Scotsman....like me.

I've got the same problem. Genuine locking wheel nuts on my Defender. These are steel wheels, so the keys are the 4 pin type. It's claimed that the keys should be stamped with a number, indicating what replacement key I need. But I can't see anything stamped on the broken keys. Questions: where should the stamped number be (on one of the hex faces, on the shoulder, on the round part, or between the pins) as I can't see anything?

Also, any suggestions on a good supplier (possibly on ebay).

I can bring one to you if you aren’t in too much of a hurry.
All mine seem to be the same.
Do you just want to remove them or get the key, or both?

Why bother with a key. They are so easy to get hold of (tealeaves carry them by the dozen) just stick standard nuts on every wheel. Saves all the hassle
