88" series, I would say S3

correct length wrong model ;)

it's a 2 or 2a

and in my thoughts are that powder coating will do little to preserve it in the long term, if/when it cracks water will creep in and sit behind the coating with more chance of attacking the steel long term, i prefer paint that chips/cracks and falls away allowing the draught to dry the water off

Clue is that it was a pre production chassis, No 002 of ten built.

Cant remember what year he said it was, I'll check when I go and pick it up for him:)

if that is really a "pre pro" chassis i know a few folks that would be swearing at you for powder coating it

88 inch series 2 or 2a , the fixings for the axle check straps are different on ser 3 and yes all series had the steering relay in the front x member except maybe the forward controls not sure about them, rear x member is wrong for series 1.

coating will crack, water will get under and make it rot worse than normal
Not my problem really, my mates project, I just do the transport. You are probably right but that's how he wants it.
Dont think it'll ever get wet after he's done it though:rolleyes:

It'll make repair harder too ;)

Thing is as james says as soon as a bolt goes in and is tightened it'll crack, same as weight of the body, sharp edges cutting through it, stones hitting from the road. Rain, water in the air, puddles etc will then get in ;) if theres moisture anywhere it'll find a way in past the crack and rot that thing from the inside out.

Just look at old bullbars

I'd talk him out of it :p try to save that rare chassis

i'm not sure but i think the "pre pro" S2s were built on modified S1 chassis' (or some of them were) as the S1 swb had grown to 88" in '56

so as to whether it's genuine "pre pro" i couldn't say as i really don't know my rivets that well

any chance of posting the chassis number and registration as i've a mate that is very heavily into the very early and factory registered S2s ('58/59 models) and he'd possibly know this vehicle personally

i'll link him to this thread if there's any more info' forthcoming

Cheers
Pete

Dropped it off this mornin dooh

I'll have a word tomorrow in case they havnt started it, I think it was galvanised at some point so it'll have some protection inside and its been waxoiled and is going to be waxoiled again after powdercoating.

just dip it in old engine oil eh, worked on old cars with leaks, they were good as new in the engine bay and underneath at the front where the oil got blown back along the chassis :)

cant really dip it in old oil ;) the coating wont let it stick to the steel :p

Ah haa,

Never thought of that, sticks to my Disco chassis, thick mix of old swivel oil and engine oil, preserve it till I sell it in the new year:)

powder coating is just a bad idea ;)

I'd go galv or some serious waxing

Tried to get my TVR chassis powder coated a few years ago, they shot blasted it but the tubes are oil/wax/grease filled and it was running out when they heated it to powdercoat and the stuff wouldn't stick.

So I painted it in Hammerite black smooth and it looks very nice.:)

I coated the series one in hammerite and then it'll get some tar and waxoyl :D
