Can I tow my trailer?

the towing law in simple terms ;

you can LEGALY tow a sankey or twin axle trailer that weighs 750 kg empty with a 90,
but if yer put a bag of crisps in the trailer you need to STOP and book your trailer test ,quote]

It isn't the actual weight of the trailer that matters it's the maximum allowable mass ie the weight it's plated for. I've got a 16ft flatbed that weighs about 750kg give or take a bit but it's plated for 3500kg. It doesn't matter what it weighs empty.

Thats right its the potential to carry weight, not the actual weight. That way they dont need a weigh bridge to nick ya.

so is the answer to make a trailer, put a plate on it saying MAM >750kgs no matter what the size of the trailer? And hope you dont get weighed if ya got more than that in it?

and they gotta find a weigh bridge to prove it.

Is a Rangie classed in VOSA or normal?
Surely haveing a 4 tonne braked trailer puts outta reach of the local plod...
As for weighing in i doubt it.So long as there is no reason to be a pull ie load secured and mainting rules of the road drive on.

I am sure the gross of a range with braked trailer puts it into vosa so that means they have to get the police to remove you from the highway to a non public place to inspect the vehicle OR issue a prohibition awaiting inspection...

Landys are lighter which is why i got a range.I did drive a 127 with a tipper and 900kg chipper plated at 5 tonne but never got stopped cos its just a landy...

i know our drillers total weight is knocking on 6.5 ton and they cant exceed that.Luckily there aint much room for much more but they occasionally stick some gravel or bentonite on.The yard manger then had to look away.....

tow after 5 pm, yer wunt see a plod or any ****er at a weigh bridge after 4.30 ,
You do round here they man it specially for the foreign truckers going to and from the irish ferries. They only pull em of the A55 going straight past it though so easy to avoid if you needed to.

no water round ere mate ! not fer miles and miles, tis quiet really once yer get out of town, never see awt really,
got pulled the other day , by vosa fer a vehicle check , then sent on me way, nawt were said bout me trailer,
never checked me licence or awt , were more interested to see if i had any imigrants stashed away !

Hi,

Group B allows you to tow up to 750kg MAM with ANYTHING, provided the car manufacturer hasn't put a lower limit .....which he probably has, unless car is quite old. The trailer will amost certainly have MAM more that half the kerbweight of the tow car, so will require brakes. For all practical purposes, this is rule irrelevent unless you have an elderly 2CV or Robin.

OR (next paragraph)

Group B allows you to tow anything with an MAM less than the UNLADEN weight of the tow car, but the combination must not exceed 3500kg (Is that combined MAMs , or ULW of car + MAM of trailer? Probably the former. Gosh, they make life difficult). A Disco weighs approaching 2000kgs unladen, which gives you about 1500kg of trailer to play with .....and thats 1500kg MAM. It will be difficult to find a trailer light enough that will carry a Landy without exceeding that. And YOU can't use a Series SWB, cos the trailer MAM will be higher than the S2 ULW.

For all practical purposes, KERBWEIGHT is irrelevent. And 85% of kerbweight is a Caravan Club RECOMENDATION for towing CARAVANS.

What you need is hire a small lorry with unladen weight of about 1000kg and MAM of 3500kg, which will allow you to carry a 2000kg Disco, plus yourself and wife, plus fuel. But I bet there ain't no such animal.

Anybody remember the JENSEN lorry? Built in aluminium to avoid the 20mph limit on 3 ton lorries in the 1950s.

All vehicles/trailers must be taken as being at MAM.

you wont find a small lorry with a MAM of under a ton. There aren't even many cars that fall into this category.
