Afternoon all,
I'm planning on borrowing a trailer off a neighbour in a minute to go pick up my brothers stuff from uni, not alot of stuff but more than can go in my 90. I have a full driving license since '03, so am limited to drive classes B and B1. Its an Ifor williams general utility trailer with 2 axles (will get unladen and gross weight in a mo if I need to). Going by this page here Vehicles you can drive and how old you must be to drive them : Directgov - Motoring
...am I legally allowed to tow this trailer with my 90?

Sorry for being slightly dumb on the matter but the last thing I want is to get points or lose my license if I get this wrong!!

Cheers

Kris

I doubt it. If it is plated over 750KG you can't :(

Seems to me, you can pull a trailer, as long as the combined weight of your 90 and trailer isnt more than 3500kg

If you have not passed your towing test you can not tow a trailer of over 750kg, It says this on both of your links.

I belive it is done on the plate weight not actual.

The rules on towing..

GTW = Gross Train Weight and is often called MAM.
MAM = Maximum admissible Mass and is the combined, maximum weight of a fully loaded vehicle and the trailer and the trailers load.

A 90/110 Discovery & RR can tow a trailer with MAM of 3.5tonnes on overrun brakes and 4 tonnes if the trailer is fitted with close coupled brakes (Hydraulic or Air brakes)

The maximum speed for towing a trailer in the UK is 60mph on Motorways and dual Carriageways and 50mph on Single lane roads. 30mph in built-up areas. (unless sign indicate otherwise)

Older licences that carry granddad rights allow the holder to drive upto a GTW of 8.25tonnes so 7.5tonne truck & 750kg trailer. or 4.75tonne truck & 3.5tonne trailer.

The new B+E requirement. for which you have to take a test if you want to tow a trailer heavier than 750kg or where the MAM would exceed 3.5tonnes, or where the MAM of the trailer would be greater than the unladen weight (Kerbweight) of the towing vehicle came in on the 1st January 1997.

These links should help to clarify anything you don't understand in the above thread.

Although, apparently you can change the Plate on the trailer to 750kg and as long as it is not over that you would be legal to tow with it...

It is very gay, im in the same boat.Me rangie will tow allsorts but cos i passed me test in 98 i dont have B+E.Ive towed before and know the punishment is 3 points for driving without a relevant liscence.Insurance is possiby effected but i thought **** it, my liscence risk it.Everything was fine but obviously if an accident happens then expect the book coming your way!

good old bureaucracy getting in the way again...

If a 17 year old in America can drive a 400hp pickup truck and pull dual trailers weighing up to 10,000lbs something is very wrong

ffs when i was working security for a major supermarket we used to regularly get a pikey family who uesd to let there 15 year old son drive the family transit or slitty, towing a horse box or tipping trailer, they would come steal from the shop, i would stop them phone the police they would say fook off we int coming out for a just a stolen dvds, cds and food, and there view on his driving under age............. we don't have time

Yeah i just went and looked and the gross weight of the trailer is 3500kg, so not looking hopeful, I can't believe you have to do a test to tow a trailer!

the test has nothing to with anything - all they want is your money.

I'm in the same boat, I have A cat C license and still cant tow anything, Yet put it behind an agricultural vehicle and there's no problem! I'm doing my C+E later in the year!

charlesY is right as usual. I am currently doing the test through work. Failed the 1st time! speeding! doh!

So i got to do it again. Basically a few moves and a 40min drive around town. Its pretty simple... if you can spot the speed limit signs!

My take on the it is that you can tow upto 750kg but if the trailer/bowser has the potential to be more then its illegal. thats why i have to do it, to tow water bowsers around and drilling rigs maybe.
