can a R reg 98 discovery 3.9ltr v8 auto on lpg which has 145,000 miles be reliable , want to use as daily hack to work and for towing 1200kg caravan about, main outing being to cornwall 360 miles

many thanks :blabla:

Mileages of 145k or more are not a problem with the V8 providing it's been looked after but with no history I'd give it a miss. Also if I was buying any V8 I'd sooner chose one without LPG, but that just a personal opinion.

its probably unlikely to fail catastrophically, but it might slip a liner or blow the headgasket at any time.

but it will give you warning, or at least you'll be able to drive it home once youve realised it's broken.

tbh mate if you want a daily hack, get a japanese. that'll never let you down.

but if you want a landy, expect the worst but hope for the best! :D

define reliable? :p
my 20 year old 140K miler has a rough idle, cuts out occasionaly when you put it in gear and gets through oil and coolant like nobodies business...

however the only time its cut out or refused to start was caused by a dodgy connection to the ignition coil, and the rest of the time without fail its never taken more than a few seconds of cranking to fire up, even on cold mornings.
its also never overheated (even in the middle of summer) and seems to run around ok on minimal oil and water

For me it's a vehicle that will always start & then take me to my destination & back without suffering any problems or giving me any cause for concern in the process. The subject of ownership costs to achieve this level of reliability is another matter altogether, but you pays your money...

not every v8 slipps a linner it is more of the gemini spec blocks rather than the earlier ones pre 94 blocks and ones fitted with catts again from 93/94 spec

Provided you have a bit of mechanical sympathy, and are prepared to do, or pay to have done, sensible maintenance and checks, then they can be as reliable as any other high mileage motor.

My V8 was still what I would consider reliable with 180000 on it, when I sold it.
It had let me down once or twice, but on each occasion it was jobs I'd put off till later.

If i'd kept on top of things, then it would have been fine.
