i have had a problem with the brakes on my disco 200 tdi for some time but has recently got worse to the point its a bit dogey now and need find out whats wrong as i cant figure it out. when i drive the car hard and rev it abit higher i can push the pedal to the floor and harly any thing happens but if i pimp it it gets better if i drive at low revs the pedal doesnt have much travel and works well.

i have had the vacc pump hose out of the servo and can feel it sucking and it sucks harder if i rev the engine as i would expect, i cant find any obvious splits in the hose from the pump to he servo.

front discs and pads have done approx 3000 miles rears are pretty much new.

any sugestions??

poor fluid , some air in system, the more tha vac the greater the force on hydraulic system ,will show up any fault more, ballooning flexis

have just checked flexis and cant see any balooning. i bled the systen out 6 months ago when i replaced the flexis on one side and used new fluid from a sealed container. if there was air i would expect the pedal to feel sponge like all the time.

the brakes always work on the road its just there seems to be different amounts of travel in the pedal and im not sure why, if i brake let off then brake again i have to push realy hard as it takes a moment or to for tha vacuum to build up again. other times when i drive harn there is loads of travel and not so much stoping power.

when i hit the pay and plays some times the pedal goes all the way down and nothing happens. i know mud/ water need to scrub off the disc befor they bite and stop but this doesnt seen to happen.

posibly seals in servo/master cylinder??

the fact your pedal will go right down means there must be air in system ,servo may also be leaking not giving you much assistance after first push the vac feed has several take offs from it check those too,get somone to pump pedal while you look in reservoir if it splashes or bubbles master cylinder heeds changing,

i have looked in the reservior and it splashes alot when brakes are pumped hard, cant see any bubbles. also apears to be i thin layer of deposits at the bottom of the reservior.

but i take it the master cylinder must be shot so i will get a new one on order an give the system a good bleed.

Isn't excessive back flow of the fluid usually a sign of worn seals in the master cylinder. They are cheap and easy to replace.

master cylinder needs changing, bleed at pipe connections by loosening pushing pedal down and tightening before letting pedal up repeat till fluid comes out of both pipe connections then brake calipers

I don't know how difficult it is to get the master cylinder out of a Disco (I'm a defender mannie) but replacing the seals is a simple job once the cylinder is out. Maybe worth getting a 2nd hand one and replacing it's seals ready to go in.

cheers for the help just ordered a new one from paddock spares £75 inc delivery, will change it some time this week or next weekend and let you know how it goes.

master cylinder fitted and things seem better, however i think there may still be air in system as i could not get the bleed nipple un-done at the to of the caliper on drivers side front, i could not get a small socket on it properly as it shape of caliper restricts it some what. and didnt want to compleatly round it off,

any sugestions of what to use to un do it??
