Brake pads click

Should I hear the brake pads click evertime the pedal is depressed?

At the begining of the year my 200 tdi failed it's MOT due to bad disc wear on the rear. On inspection none of the discs looked to bright so I replaced the lot, scoured the web and mags and got a reasonable aftermarket deal around £90 all in. The braking was dramatically improved, no pulling or fade took some time to get used to not pressing so hard and extra early. During the last couple of weeks, mainly because it's been warm and the windows are open I have noticed a click coinciding with the depression of the brake pedal, outside the car. Thought it strange so found a quite road and drove slowly appling the brakes and sure enough every time I pressed the pedal there is a click. Before the brake parts replacement the vehicle would not move when the brake pedal was released unless throttle was applied whereas now as soon as the pedal is released the vehicle freely rolls.

This has in no way affected the braking and all the parts are as secure as when fitted.

It sounds to me like one of the pads is jumping when it's pushed against the disc. This could be because there is a pin or spring not in properly or missing, the caliper could have worn letting the pad move about more than usual.

It does that on my current 300,and has on previous ones and a 200,too.I think its due to pattern part pads having larger tolerences and hence being smaller allowing them to shift around a bit.I have a the right pins etc and it doesnt stop it happening.Anyone else?

What discomania said, but first I would remove the pads on the affected wheel thats easy as they are new, then re-assemble, putting copper grease on the locating edges and at the back if the pad if this was has not already been done.

I hope you used a known make of pads, theres some iffy ones about that are not to spec and among other things can be a few m.m under sized.

i had the same fault on some ferrodo pads i fitted, it turned out the whole batch from where i got the pads from was faulty.

other than this it's most likely to be a worn caliper

the clicking is common on pattern parts , you can hear mine clickety click at low speed crawling through traffic when window is open .

Its also a common problem on Discos that the calipers wear, such that the pads work thru the caliper and down in to the hub .

If they're clicking they aint seized.......bonus.

Mine are the same. I've just fitted a nearly new caliper on one side and it still rattles.

I have just fitted EBC pads to the front, without any probs, perfect, and they are a patten part.

i dont like things not to be right, i need two chill pills when i find something on the disco that does my head in hahahaha

Thanks for the input, have visually checked all the pins, springs etc are in place so pads can't go far. Strange thing, noticed the pads only click when braking whilst moving forward so pads are definitely moving. As to manufacture they are AP Lockheed bought from Paddock Motors.

Not showing off at this price... £12.49 plus p&p from a supplier on ebay.

Took the wheels off today and found the pads to move up and down on the pins because the mounting holes in the pad back plates are elongated. They appear to have been made this way probably to allow for the tolerances in the caliper castings but obviously a bit on the generous side. This movement will probably wear the castings so I guess I will approach Paddock Motors to find out more, until then I'll use the air-con and keep the windows shut.
