Brake pad compressor thingy !

Ok, so I don't have a G clamp or piston compressor, will undoing the bleed nipple on the brake fluid reduce the pressure for more to manually force the piston back or is the G clamp the only way ?

What you trying to do, if your changing pads you can gently prise back the pistons with a spanner, just make sure you do it evenly and dont press brake pedal with pads out. no need to undo nipple, there are time to fiddle with nipples ,but not when your doing your brakes.

Things are a lot easer if the nipple is undone before pushing the piston back into the caliper when a ABS is fitted, but as stated there's no need to. Ive used a lot of items to push back the piston in the past including a tyre lever, big screwdriver and bit of timber and on some cars a special tool to 'wind' the piston back into the caliper (G clamp).

BIG pair of pipe grips is my favoured tool and i work on 99% ABS cars.

Land Rover calipers do not need winding back in so a simple squeeze will do

Cool !! thanks for the advice, does the pressure need to be spread over both surface areas, i.e. a bit of wood or something to compress both pistons at the same time ?

Well, I don't know what you lot eat for breccy, but I can't shift them back lol !! tried with the wheel brace along the width of the caliper as a lever but no joy :-/

Have you removed the cap from the fluid resevour? sorry i cant spell

Yes outherwise your trying to force piston back and in process building pressure. Make sure you push back gently otherwise can damage master cylinder

Still wont budge :-( will have to get a g clamp I wreckon !

I use a worn out pad (kept 4 job) and a couple of tyre levers to do mine

you dont need to open a bleed nipple ,but you may need to press brake pedal to push piston further out making sure it doesnt come all the way out ,and clean piston with fine emery then push piston back in ,it will need some force either by lever or big water pump pliers

Pushing a corroded piston back into the caliper under force could damage the seal or even jam, that's a proplem u don't really wont.

Agreed, I note on one of the pistons, it has like a material type gater if you like, there is a small hole in it about 4mm in diameter, i'm wandering if they're ceased :-/

A set of these are worth it and stops the possibility of any piston burr /marking if you're using levers n spanners......far easier, especially if like me, you go through pad sets at a fast rate!

Could have let guck build up around the piston. could do as suggested and gently let the piston out and pull the gater bach and have a look. If your having problems with doing the pads maybe take it to a garage as you dont want mess round with brakes if not confident on what your doing.

Caution a lot of garages just say caliper nacked and fit new!!! not cheapest item to replace for want of bit of time spent on it
