Binding noise from rear diff

Hi guys, I've got a binding noise coming from the rear diff on my 97 300tdi disco. It's similar to brake binding noise, plus shuddering when braking above 40mph. Any ideas? If it turns out to need new rear diff, is this hard to replace?

They are all good, I've just replaced rear discs, pads, calipers and bearings as I was convinced they were the problem. But the noise is without a doubt coming from the diff

could be the output shaft bearings in the diff,but the rear diff is **** easy to replace

The two roller bearings either side of the hub

Ok, Is it just a case of removing half shafts, rear prop shaft, Un bolting old one and bolting on a new one? Cheers

Yeah, on both sides

the axle has 4 x wheel bearings rtc3429 ,2 x diff carrier bearings rtc3095 ,2 x pinion bearings 539706 and 539707 ,if on over run i would check the latter by feeling diff flange

Ok, the noise is always there unless the disco isn't moving! Thanks for the part numbers

then perhaps diff carrier bearings

YEP bout an hours work

I have a 300tdi 95 model, just after a little advice, when i accelarate i get a wining noise from the rear diff area, when i let of the throttle it stops 😒 i have changer rear wheel bearings, pinion bearing , its driving me maddddd now

diff pinion bearings are usually noisy on overrun ,diff carrier bearings on power ,why dont you check prop ujs and try vehicle with rear prop removed

Had a similar problem with mine. The nut holding the front coupling on the diff was loose.
