Evening all,

what is everyones opinon on the best off road tyres for a discovery. i have insa turbo special tracks at the moment with about 100 miles on them but i have seen alot of trucks with larger tyres on and i want to start being more adventerous off roading so the extra clearance is going to be needed but i would like your opinons

damn the oval ones are out of the question then

I suspect you want advice on type and size of tyres suitable for offroad use - might be helpful if you could tell us age/type of vehicle; does it currently have lifted suspension etc.

You need to give a lot more info and be less vague.

it currently has 2 inch lift on chocks but these are being removed and being relaced with 2 inch lift kit with 60mm doughnut chocks(a few other peices that needed to be done due o lift)

the vehicle itself is a 1993 200 tdi

i want the best all round tyres so i will rareely get stuck but they have good road handling aswell

Ok that gives us something to work on.

A very popular tyre size for your current configuration is 235/85/16. Bear in mind if you go for bigger tyres it will raise the gearing slightly, but on a TDi 200 you should be ok.

As for actual tyres themselves, GG AT²'s or BFG AT or Mud tyres are imo opinion the best combination of grip, sidewall protection (important when offroad) and durabilty - it is not unknown for them to last 60-80,000mls.

another vote for general grabber or bfg ats, never used them myself but have heard good things about them.

there is a thread at the top to help you with tyre sizes but a lot will depend on how much you are willing to cut from the discos body

i have chopped out most of the arches already but i will look into the tyres suggested so far

Search this forum for BFG and GG AT2's

There are lots of threads all saying how good they are, and I have not seen anyone actually say that these two are crap, if they have run on them.
The only common theme is what ever tyre you're on, its the best

I have AT2's and they are great, eveything I wanted in a tyre, as local dealer was doing offer on AT2's when I wanted them, never had BFG so no direct comparison

Quite simply, either are good tyres, no complaints, take your pick and enjoy

35" are the biggest you can really get away with, but you need a rather large lift, but they cruise through ruts.

gotta watch out for your driveline though, take it steady.

33" / 265/75 is a happy medium, nicely big enough but not too big to overstress the components.

i run 33x12.5 on 3" lift and it's nice. enough height for ruts and gearing is ok, although off road its 1st gear mostly.

i am very into the big tyre look so MUST run fat tyres, although theyre not as good as narrower tyres for true cutting ability or agility. they do seem to do nicely in soft peaty ground though, 10psi air down and they dont cut/sink too bad.

maxxis make good tyres for the money too btw.

most common choice is 265/75/16 insa turbo

secondly bfg is some kinda of 31-33" size, varying widths. theyre great on road too.

could waffle on all day, shan't.
