Up until last year, I always had VW commercial vehicles, and consequently, joined a VW van forum site.

After 3 years of constant breakdowns and component failures I got rid of it. ( thank god ! ), and got a Vauxhall. ( which has yet to go wrong ! ).

Anyway, I still post the odd reply on the aforementioned forum site. Within the context of one of these replies I let it slip that I had got a Land Rover Discovery.

The odd comment about them running on steam came with some of the following posts, until one " member " just posted;

" Discovery is a complete load of rubbish and the best thing that could happen to it is a gallon of petrol and a match ". ( which is, incidentally, what I thought about the VW before I got rid of it !! ).

I feel a little bit bruised by this remark, so have come straight over here for a bit of support !!!.

At least I, sort of, knew what to expect when I bought the Disco, but VW,s are "supposed" to be reliable !.

Del.

Do they not know how expensive petrol is lately, they're too thick to realise that 5 gal. of parafin from the hardware store is cheaper!! probably comes from driving VW's - glad to hear you saw the light.

No pun intended....

:D cnut:D

Not as well as it woulda done if it hadn't been dunked in salisbury sess water the week before.:p
Ha, funny you should say that Ratty - i used to work for Esso pipelines and they have one that goes right across the middle of Salisbury Plain, which burst a few years back and spewed 180,000 gallons of high octane jet fuel out, only because the ground is chalk, it just disappeared and got soaked in, so somewhere around there the salisbury sess water has a fairly high octane rating!!! Note...don't smoke on Salisbury plain!

He was right, should have got yourself a VW Toureg, it would tow the arse out of any Disco.
Discos are known as Ormeau Bread vans over here. Just stand behind it and look at that ridiculously oversized rear door. I mean has anyone ever filled a disco to max height capacity? perfect for stacking crates of fresh bread.

Better a bread van than the barby-mobile or hairdressers puff chariot. As gaylanders are referred to.

As for the morons on the Vain ****ers forum. It's probably jealousy.

Just about. I loaded a few layers of old bricks in the back and then an old tumble drier on top!

I don't believe in all this "this cars crap coz it can't do X or this cars better coz it can do Y". A car is better or worse depending on what you want it for. I have a disco because it easily does everything I want it to - tow the wifey's horse trailer while carrying 5 people and all the gear that goes with it, carry big stuff from ikea / b&q, take stuff down the tip, go offroad without getting stuck every 5 minutes etc etc. Maybe there is a better vehicle out there for my purposes but I haven't seen it yet.

We got offered a Toureg as a courtesy car (like for like 4x4 they said) when our 1st Disco got smashed up in a crash, absolutely gorgeous, £50,000 car, 3.0lt diesel which did 120mph uphill and still accelerating, we just ran out of road:D

Sent it back cos I didn't want to pay any damages!! Would I have one over a Disco? if I was loaded maybe, but I wouldn't do in the Toureg what I'd do in a Disco it's just a bit too posh. And besides dont all 4x4's these days look alike, at least no one will mistake a Disco for any other 4x4.

wot about a 20year old Toureg (if there was one)?

Hmm, maybe...but you can only fit 5 in the Toureg, whereas the Disco can take me & the wife, 5 kids and a dog in spacious comfort without struggling for power, Disco's might be a bit rough around the edges but personally for us as a family it's the dogs bollo:eek:s. Oh and it's much cheaper to maintain.

Truth be told, if you pick up a Disco for good money you cant go wrong, even if it does have an oversized rear end :p
The Toureg is a bit plush, although the series III is reaching that price territory. Incidentally, my uncle was the first person to take ownership of the series III, it was flown over by helicopter. Too rich for my blood, why they made a 3ton vehicle with spare wheel underneath is beyond me.
Dont forget a 7 seater Disco is classed as a minibus, legally you can only tow 750kg
