Hi guys had a bit of trouble with my Disco 2.5tdi its never turned over very fast, so yesterday I tried to start the car left it until heater light went out turned it over wouldnt crack up turned it for 5 or 6 seconds no luck, done that 4 times battery getting flat had to jump it from my partners Rover 400 cracked up straight away, went to my mates garage tested the battery quick discharge test all ok that was after a 50 mile journey. What is the recommended size of battery and whats the easiest way to check the heater plugs, cheers.

not answering questions directly, but check/clean the earth straps (battery to chassis/chassis to starter etc) Take them off and sandpaper the surfaces clean. Oh remove a glow plug, hold the body against engine, get someone to turn ignition on and watch it glow (or not)

I squeezed an 800CCA battery into my Disco in the standard location, but with a modification of the battery clamp. I can't remember the type but a search on my threads should reveal. Beware of comparing marine cranking amps with cold cranking amps - they're not the same thing.

I'm having exactly the same problem with mine. Was told the battery was a bit weak when I brought the landy a couple of months ago but always started fine until recently.

I guess the cold weather is showing up the weak battery.

Funny thing is it's the only battery I have ever seen that has the green health light glowing. I think mine is just the wrong battery though rather than a duff one.

I will have a look at what the spec on mine is tomorrow.

Bit skint at the moment so it will have to be jump starts from the car for a while.

Land Rover don't think so, my disco was fitted with a 072 580 cca when I got it as all discos were then.
Now using a 072 660 cca and it's fine but then all it get's used for is starting the engine.

Don't get one then! Stick with your smaller battery, it should do the job anyway. Land Rover didn't attach a winch to the front of my car, so with that in mind the bigger the battery the better, without getting into the complication of 2 batteries, 2 mounting positions, split charges that aren't reliable, one battery failing and dragging the other down, etc etc.

My battery is a VARTA E24

570 138 057

12v 70Ah 570A

Is this too weak? Won't start her up now. Just turning over and not firing.

Similar spec battery to the one LR fitted when your disco was new so will spin over you engine.
Check the electrolyte level and then put it on charge over night and check the specific gravity with a hydrometer or a simple battery good or bad tester.
But if the engine is turning over but not firing then u have a problem somewhere else.

What year and auto or manual gearbox?

As the first post said, it turns over but does not fire.

Keep the key turned for 10 - 15 seconds nothing, try about 3-4 times and by then the turnover is sluggish.

Its a sealed battery so cant check any levels. What I do have is a noisy alternator but the warning light stays off and I have just changed the serpentine belt.

The battery is on charge now so will fit it in the morning and see if it starts. If it does I will go and get the charging tested by a garage with a meter.

DO they charge for that service?

Was just gonna take it to a mate that works in Motormania to put a meter on the battery while the car is running to check the alternator.

If thats ok and the battery drains again then its time to buy a new one.

Not sure how old this one is anyway.
