I hope you might be able to help me I have a 1992 disco 200 tdi and today on driving to work. I noticed the rev counter wasn't moving off 0 and also the battery light was on? Any ideas or thoughts would be great as am a bit worried as there hasn't been anything like this before. But from what I have read the common denominator with the rev counter and battery is the alternator?? I haven’t looked under the bonnet or anything as am at work now till this evening although I did try turning it off then on again :p in the car park.

Thanks Ben

I know its a old thred but is this still the cause. i have a disco 1 battery lights been on since i got it but he had it diagnosed as a faulty wire. Now the rev counter dosnt work.

thanks rob

The light comes on when it isnt supplying power to the Alternator, or the alternator isnt grounding the wire in use.
The rev counter is driven (the timing pulse) from the Alternator.

It sounds like there is something amiss with your alternator - start there.

Lift bonnet, check big chunky spinny thing. If big chunky spinny thing is missing or fooked. replace.

Are there still any firms about who recondition alternators and Starter motors?

I'd be especially interested in firms near Coventry.

Dunno about Coventry, but there's a chap just outside of Redditch. ;)

Top tip guys as I have just done mine.

If you cant find an alternator for a Discovery 200 tdi then use a defender item and rotate the casing to make it the correct hand. Plus the defenders are 70 amp so a little bit more umph if only 5amp

Just did a search and found a guy in Coventry who will recon an alternator for £95 plus vat. Which is the same price as a new 100 amp one or for a little extra a 120 amp off Papa G.
So what's the point of reconditioning the old one when I can buy new and weigh the old one in for scrap.

Cheers people. the guy who i bought it off put a bew altenator on it as he thought that was at fault and putting light on. i checked wiring today back to bulkhead. removed clocks to see if i can see anything. nope. built it back up and rev counters working. battery lights been on since i got it he had a quote of £60 to repair wiring but it didnt bother him and its never really bothered me until today. I found ouy my speedos electronic tho so ill get under it tonight and see if its damageed wiiring.
