Evening gents, on my 300 tdi auto the folding gator on the auto change stick is missing (the part to the front and back of the stick which moves with it when u select gears etc), which im not assed about but after ive been driving a while i can feel heat down this void where the gator would be. Is this something to be concerned about?? Im thinking it could either be the led's heating up after a while, normal heat transfering up from the gearbox or maybe the box getting hot is a sign that somethings wrong? There are no probs with the gears, everythings working fine. I havnt checked the oil level tho. Can anyone shed some light on this??
John

transmission does get hot ,transfer box on long journeys through having thick oil ,gearbox as is part of having torque convertor instead of flywheel and clutch, until lock up some of engine power is turned to heat and not forward motion

Thx for the quick reply james, i had noticed this since getting the motor last year and it was just one of those niggly things at the back of your mind u know. Put my mind at rest now, cheers bud

Have the same thing on my auto turns out to be the two lamps that light up the selections ether side of the selector. So after a lot of looking and head screeching when one of the bulbs died that side was cold.

Agree with both, many times the wrong bulbs get put in the selector as the 5w or more ones are the common ones on sale.Putting 2w in helps and (probably wrong but I do it) just using one, lighting the one side keeps it cooler.Plus the stick DOES get hot in normal use - I find it worrying myself but I am on my 3rd auto D1 and they have all been that way !
