I ran just water for 3 over a month. Don't think it matters just that it cools the motor.

Anti freeze has two jobs, one is to stop the water freezing and the other is to stop the water corroding the internals of the engine.
The Red is long life and should last 5 years, Blue lasts about two. After this time they start to loose the inhibitor properties and possibly the antifreeze.
You have to give the system a good flush before changing
I have just changed mine (300Tdi) as it was too weak so I out red in it cost about £20

Antifreeze is antifreeze. I use blue coz i get it free but i check it regular to make sure its not leaking and what temp itl go to.but usually change it every year. And do a full service on my disco.

Don't use the stuff with OATS in older engines - it attacks the seals. There are threads on this on various forums.

I have seen this before and wondered if its so good why no manufacturers use it?
I struggle to see the benefits but am I missing something?

Comp vehicles because of high temps as explained in the vid, but for me I have never had any problems in coolant replacement its simple so I will carry on.
My companies Accord has a 10 year replacement schedule on the coolant that's installed in the factory so nearly there, not that we are that interested as the cars are replaced just before the first MOT is due. :)

Done:

20 LTR PLATINUM New CONCENTRATED RED LONGLIFE (5yr) ANTIFREEZE - 20 LITRE 20L | eBay

I've got enough to do the golf as well.

de ionised water: apparently tap water can contain minerals that can cause deposits that build up on the hottest parts of the cooling system so for what its worth I may put it in but ive always used tap water in the past with no problems so i will see if i can be bothered at the time. Ready mixed is usually a 50/50 mix using de ionised water.

defrosted freezer water is fine too.

nice product, but pricey. it's not uncommon to change engine parts which require topup and draining on our landies.

also what happens if you get an issue when out and need to topup from a stream?

When you get down to the science bit deionised can strip impurities from the engine etc thats why you should never drink it.
As long as the waters not too hard so leaves calcium behind it should be fine, just look in your kettle.
