A couple of my recent posts were about my dodgy audio. One day the CD wouldn't work and a slam of the bonnet brought it back. A rather rotund chap I work with got in the passenger seat and that brought the tape player back!

As a few of you pointed out, sounds like a dodgy connection or two but the really weird thing this morning was that when I got in the car after being stood since Monday, it smelt of TCP and no audio worked at all, wouldn't even turn on! The trip computer is fine and sat nav etc so the unit's getting power.

I've read about fuse 49 and the like but I was wondering if you kind people could take further pity on me and advise me how to take out the head unit and which wires to check etc.

As always, thanks for your help :)

Check for water in the spare wheel compartment in the boot

I had to change my tailgate rubber seal and that sorted the problem
Was leaking like a sieve

Just sit in the car and get someone to spray a hose all over the back tailgate and side windows

Then check for water drips lol

Thanks for the answers peeps. It got more weird on the drive home! I thought I'd have sat nav on rather than a blank screen and as I got closer to home the screen fizzled and went off, no power, nothing, nada zip. I turned off the engine on my drive and remembered that I hadn't reset the rear wiper into it's original position due to the clapped out motor (another story but I won't post and moan about that as I can prob fix that) and when I turned back on the screen kind of reset itself. The best way I can describe it was if the software running it before going off was Windows 8, it rebooted itself in Windows 3.11????? I turned the monitor off and left it.

After a little googling and reading previous posts (I really should learn to do that before creating a new thread but in my defence, I do enjoy the banter with you lot) it looks like I'm going to be ripping my dash apart at the weekend along with my wife spraying me with a hose like you suggested.

Still love the car though!!!

Well after a bit of tearing and ripping apart at the weekend, you all were right and the carpets in the rear were damp on the n/s only. The TCP smell was coming from inside the compartment housing all those boxes and wires (are all those really needed). Bar a couple of dribbles going down the rear post that the tailgate sits on, I couldn't really see anything too drastic though. The connections appeared to be dry as well.

I tried the fuse 49 trick (yes Saint I waited until the red light went out on the sat nav, so glad you mentioned that all those posts ago!!), no joy. Disconnected the battery but all that did was give me the inactive air suspension warning. A quick All comms and left to right sorted that but still no sound. Everything else on the head unit works great though???

Any thoughts what to do next boffins or is my head unit boo garred

i would suggest pulling the plugs on dsp amp if you have it fitted (largest black box at the back of the boot compartment) it should have 3 plugs spray it with some electrical contact cleaner both in the plug and onto the connections on the amp.

as to the screen issue going to look like a very early version of windows that indicates either water in the connections of the nav drive or the nav drive itself has got wet and died, you may be very lucky and be able to dry it out if you leave it in the airing cupboard for a few days. the change in screen is caused by the tv module taking over once the nav unit fails for whatever reason

Thanks for the quick reply, much appreciated from you lot as always. There is a large black box back there along with other stuff so maybe I'll go ape with the WD40 and cross my fingers.

The sat nav unit seems to be spot on and works as it should and after that initial windows reboot thingy it did, its been back to normal ever since. Strange, strange vehicles ........

usually on mine after heavy rain i occasionally get the phone & dsp amp both stop working, and it's always water in the plugs on the 2, only discovered the other day that the boot carpet was wet on the passenger side by the tailgate so i'm guessing my boot seal is leaking. but i have a slight tailgate rattle at the moment so i'm going to try adjusting that first to see if it pulls the tailgate in enough, another old trick is to spray the rubber seals with silicone oil (LR reccomend this in service documents) it lubricates the ruber seals and give them some flexibility back.

i've also now fitted a plastic sheet (black bag) over the lower electrical units in the boot to help keep the water off.

Good thinking Batman, first job when I get in tonight, well probably second, got to get the damned thing working first!!!!

Rubbing oil and black bags are such simple ideas and it's usually the simple ones that are the best.

Appreciated :)

Hi Mate welcome to the nut house !

Areas to check carpet in front footwells
Check behind kick panel passenger front footwell there is a multiplug that corrodes and causes havoc, if it is showing green corrosion best thing to do is cut off multi plug and solder and shrink wrap, also check water is not coming in from pollen filters.

I hope that helps

The bags/plastic will not stop condensation getting into the units from the water getting in.

I've had several plays over the last couple of weekends but to no avail. The unit was soaking wet and I've managed to dry that out including the three cables on the top but nothing will get the head unit back into life. I think the main thing is to source the cause of the leak first before I worry about having some music on. On the plus side it's taking my mind off the gearbox juddering and what's going to go next !!!!:faint2:
