I tried searching but couldn't find an answer.

We're pretty sure that the AMR4886 on my mates 96 300tdi auto is intermittently goosed, so i bought a used one and a fob from a nice chap on this here forum.

Today was the 1st chance I had to fit it, which only took a few minutes. The new (used) box n key fob locks n unlocks the doors, however the motor turns over but it won't start. Swapped back the old box and it starts 1st time.

I googled this until my eyes bled to no avail, any idea what I'm doing wrong?

thx

Have you searched 'alarm spider'?

Yep, its a 300tdi auto so there's no spider behind the dash. (from what i read). I guess i'm just trying to figure out what else i need to do after swapping over the AMR4886 green box n fob. (press the fob three times with one eye closed while standing on one leg and randomly stabbing the dashboard with a pointy stick?)

AMR4886 is an early model of ecu, is it replacing like for like? other than that, an electrical contact is iffy at the plug or it's a faulty ecu.

Thanks, the boxes look like for like, I've checked the plugs and cables and can't find any problems there.

I've spend the last several hours searching then re-reading threads.

I found one thread which says that because this is a fly by wire motor that the edc / edu has the immobiliser built in and the box is matched with the injector pump.

Unfortunately this kinnda makes sense, when i swapped over the boxes, the central locking worked fine with the new fob, the engine turns but it doesn't fire. Swapped back to the original box and it starts first time.

We do a fair bit of (somewhat remote) off road stuff, and the immobiliser has triggered a few times (usual at inconvenient times / places) the alarm & central locking aren't important so ideally I would like to bypass the whole thing but I can't find much info on how to do it, hence the plan to replace the box with a one which doesn't have an intermittent fault.

There is a very small dark-coloured chip which is separate from the main circuit board. If you don't swap this from your old to 'new' fob, the engine immobiliser won't release.

Lots of reading of old threads and some helpful pms to forum members and it turns out that you can't just exchange the green box (AMR4886) even tho its a like for like fit.

The green box and fob need to be synced up with the ecu by someone who knows their way around testbook. (The only land rover dealer around here is not held in high regard so this might be somewhat troublesome).

The long term plan is going to have to be to change the pump and injectors and dump the electronic stuff, its too unreliable and its not like its gonna get better with age.
