It might be useful to understand that all the fluids have one thing in common - they are all hydraulic fluid, in other words the same broad type.

ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) is usually marketed by what std it is supposed to be such as Dexron IID or III or the latest VI. Dexron is the trade name that GM used when it first started to conduct tests and it has stuck.

What I'm trying to say it that it doesn't matter too much what colour it is red, green or sky-blue with spots - what matters is that there is enough fluid in.

All the atf's are mixable as well, so just buy the colour you like and top-up.

This what the D2 workshop states which no doubt you have seen. So it you believe the ambient temps in your part of the world won't reach -20c then use the Texaco stuff or ATF, which has already been mentioned.

ACE fluid
Where ambient temperature falls below -20° C (-4°F), use only Texaco cold climate power assisted steering fluid PSF 14315. Where ambient temperature remains above -20° C (-4° F), use either Texaco cold climate power assisted steering fluid or Dexron 11 or Dexron 111 non-synthetic fluid.

i highly recommend the original PAS fluid despite of it's price cos:

1. i made some research and even if they recommend the ATF where it doesnt get cold there's a difference in density and viscosity between the ATF and the STC50519(and especially in the ACE the density is very important being a high pressure system)...also in all the threads i've read about failed ACE or PAS pumps they all used ATF not the other

2. the recommendation about ATF as alternative afaik is only in the NAS RAVE, in the european one it's only the PAS fluid stated for ACE(attached)... i have no ideea why but even in the NAS RAVE for PAS it's not stated the ATF as alternative

3. according to the maintainance check sheet the ATF must be renewed once at 24 months while the PAS/ACE fluid must be just topped up or i think renewed together with the reservoir at 156K miles

4. i'm not saying that the ATF is not good i just stick to my ideea that the PAS fluid is better for the system

everybody's choice though

when you say the PAS/ACE reservoir should be renewed at 156K miles, do you mean just the fluid in the reservoir or the actual reservoir (the plastic bottle thing)??

I remember seeing this in RAVE, but never quite understood why the reservoir should be changed. Does the plastic get brittle and prone to crack or something?

they say only about reservoir but i can't tell you the reason(check sheet attached)

that's on the back of the maintainance check sheet:
RAVE said:
WARNING :
Two wheel roller tests must not be carried out . Four wheel roller tests must be restricted to 5Km/ hour ( 3miles/ hour ) .
IMPORTANT
OIL CHANGE DIESEL ENGINES

If the vehicle is operated on fuel with a high sulphur content (over 1%) the oil change intervals must not exceed 10,000Km (6000 miles)
VEHICLES FITTED WITH SUPPLEMENTARY RESTRAINT SYSTEMS
The seatbelt pre- tensioners (where fitted) and air bags must be replaced every TEN YEARS
Side air bags must be replaced every FIFTEEN YEARS
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT :
At 120,000 Km (72,000 miles) or every six years, whichever is the sooner, all hydraulic brake fluid seal and hoses should be renewed.
All working surfaces of the caliper cylinders should be examined and renewed where necessary.
Vehicles used extensively in arduous/ off road conditions - check the road wheel speed sensors, brake pads and calipers for abrasive wear at 1500 km (1000 miles) intervals
Air suspension vehicles used extensively in arduous/ off road conditions will require the compressor inlet filter to be replaced at more regular intervals .
The Power Steering/ ACE fluid reservoir should be replaced at 250,000Km (156,000 miles)
When the vehicle is used in dusty or field conditions or deep wading , frequent attention to the air cleaner may be required .
When the vehicle is used in areas where fuel quality is poor, more frequent draining of the fuel filter/ sedimentor may be required.
For full details regarding the operations contained in this maintenance check sheet, please refer to the workshop manual.
GLOSSARY
FIRST SERVICE (FS) = The first service required after sale of vehicle. The interval at which this service is required is identified by the table overleaf.
MAIN SERVICE = The main service is applicable to all vehicles. It is carried out at 12 month or 12,000 miles intervals, whichever occurs first.
Main Service "A" is applicable at 12 months/ 12,000 miles, 36 months/ 36,000 miles, 60 months/ 60,000 miles 84 months/ 84,000 miles and so on.
Main Service "B" is applicable at 24 months/ 24,000 miles, 48 months/ 48,000 miles, 72 months/ 72,000 miles, 96 months/ 96,000 miles and so on. Some items do not need to be carried out at every main service and these items are identified by an indicator in the tick box e. g. 60k (This indicates that this item is only applicable every 60 months/ 60,000 miles)
