I have searched this but with no joy. My 300tdi p reg normally runs perfectly with the abs light going out after 5metres or so of motion. Sometimes i.e. one time in 10 or 20 it fails to go out so I stop, set and unset the alarm and move off again, it has always gone out when I do this, any ideas?:D

Sounds like a wheel sensor that either needs tapping home or replacing.

I'd stick it on Testbook and read the codes,a wheel speed sensor issue usually faults all the time or as soon as you go round a bend/over a large bump etc.
I wonder if its one of the feed relays packing up,the ecu will log a "No voltage at pin 1" fault if the relay fails to pull in cleanly on startup.
Tapping all the wheel sensors in gently is good housekeeping anyway, gives early news of rear wheelbearing issues or with swivel bearings/CV carrier bearings - more than a couple of MM movement spells trouble.

I had this problem, over the months it got worse, with the light staying on more times than not. The diagnostics showed it to be the front rhs wheel sensor gap. It turned out that there was excessive play in the front wheel bearings. It's all been fine since new bearings were fitted.

You could try some self diagnosis using the guide found here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richard.martin/discovery/abs diagnostics.rtf before you pay some one to put it on Testbook
