Evening all,

Just a query about the TD5 engine, as I'm new to these having had many 300TDi's. It's in a 2004 Discovery 2, all totally standard, 129K miles.

At different throttle openings the engine noise varies. I know this sounds obvious, but I'm not talking about volume. At very light throttle openings in 3rd or 4th it can sound a little rattly, as it does too on the over run. Under wider throttle openings it is quieter and very smooth, no smoke, all as I would expect it to be. Just seems a bit strange that the 'tappety' sound is greater under no or low load. I have changed the oil last week, used Shell Helix 5W30 as per the recommendations. Definitely sounds like tappets.

Doesn't sound serious, just curious!

Any thoughts welcome.

Thanks, Julian.

mines the same. 2000 td5 defender. dont think its to much to worry about. the only reason i say that is because my old man has a 2002 td5 and that does exactly the same thing..
cheers jack

I might try a bottle of this. The Disco has a complete service history and has never missed an oil change, and in fact has had the same oil all it's life as it was serviced by Land Rover until a short time ago. It has always had Shell Helix AF 5w30 in it, and that is what I have just used in the most recent oil change. I suppose my observation is about the different engine note under different conditions - over run versus load. It doesn't sound like anything is amiss, and I hear a lot of TD5's all of which seem to sound the same! Thanks anyway!

I wouldnt worry, its more to do with how the engine ecu is fuelling the engine than any other problem. And not all TD5 ecu's behave in the same way, even with standard software downloads in them.Have it remapped and it will sound/behave different again - apart from just making more power/torque.
