"A showroom fresh Jimny is better off road, than a similar defender"

Jimima's are good on level ground and up hills better power to weight ratio. but on ruts or on very rough ground they'll soon ground out.

The OP said a shop bought jemima but then went on to say he'd modded his. which makes the 1st post useless as it's not std. or as supplied by the dealer.

I haven't modified it, other than recovery points, and AT tyres. The tyres should be 205/70R15 but are 205/75R15, so not really a 'mod'.

But finally, a decent argument. I just checked, and a defender has bigger wheels, which I guess leads to more ground clearance under the diff, so perhaps a defender does have better 'ruts' ability. This didn't seem to be the case on sunday though. The only place I got stuck, was about 2 ft further down the lane than sticky stuff's '90.

I actually do like the little Jimny's, I used to have the older version, the SJ413.
Great fun but not much use for carrying people, stuff or towing anything.

However, a few more things to consider;
Although Land Rover quotes a 500mm wading depth, that's actually well known to be quite a conservative figure, and they can easily handle much deeper water without modification.

Low range transfer box - got to be useful when climbing very steep hills, rock crawling and going down very steep hills? The same thing applies to the centre diff lock - must give the Defender an edge in those circumstances.

Is class 2 for toy cars?

I would offer a sensible argument, but I canna be arsed.

Suffice to say - my 65 year old mam wants a JimJimJimny.

Says it all?

Ya but we're considering off road performance... if we were considering the car as a whole, there's no contest between the Jimny and the 'fender, obviously.

It's suprisingly good, especially away from ruts as the approach/breakover/departure angles are so good.

To answer a previous post - no it doesn't have any electronic helpers, such as terrain response. That's a good point. Modern discos have a tendancy to make really difficult terrain look almost mickey mouse

to be fair sticky has next to no off-road expieriance (no dis-respect sticky ;) we all have to start somewhere) and was not going at it like he should have if he had picked routes and used momentum he would have gone pretty much anywhere i went (barring the deep water as he had no snorkel)
and as to your jimny it did do well but if it had been mild weather i think you would have been struggling big style if you had followed sticky all day.
i have watched lots of differant slitty's on salisbury plains and yet to see 1 do anywhere near what a defender will do (even on the rubber that sticky has on atm.
next time we go out i would like to see you follow me all day ;)

Right, my turn! As I was there for first hand experience of sticky's deepender and the jimny getting stuck. I would firstly love to point out that the the reason you got stuck where you did was because it was the only place you didnt have the opportunity to drive around! Sticky tried just about everything and on the occasion he got STUCK other than when the Jimny did lifechooser drove round rather than through!

Equally when the Jimny did get stuck he got 2 feet further up the track coz of his momentum, which sticky wasn't using; he just rolled in and stopped short.
The passenger side tyres on the Jimny were lifted an inch off the water let alone the ground when it was stuck. Sticky needs to learn to give it a lil more when he thinks he might struggle, especially with those near bold tyres lol. Same contest next time with good condition ATs all round and it WILL be a different story ;-)

See which one of them survives Halstock eh Bucky? lol
