when driving along at bout 30 - 40 mph with the drivers window about a 1/4 of the way down, i get a stange pop, pop, pop noise from behind me somewhere.

It goes straight away if i close the window.

Any ideas? it's driving me crazy as i usually drive round with the window open no matter what the weather.

thanks

Open the rear passenger window slightly at the same time, and the popping will stop. I've had this. It's the car cupping the air as you travel, without somewhere for it to escape out the back.

Yep, gotta crack the window behind slightly

or - get air deflectors for the doors

or - check yer hearing aid

The car is behaving as a Helmoltz resonator. I used to design loudspeaker cabinets using this principal! The air in the car is acting as a spring moving the air in the window in and out at its natural frequency, hence the noise. The air pressure in the car is also fluctuating in simpathy and this is one cause of travel sickness. The frequency can be below the audio range so that its not always heard. More upsetting to babies and children.
Safer to drive with the windows closed and the blower on.

Never had a problem in any other cars i have owned, is it the shape of the interior that causes it?

Think i'll get myself some wind deflectors, any suggestions on what type and wre to get them?

Landrover dealer, they are still in stock
I got them for the same reason and it helped
- it also stops the screen wash from coming round on you

It's 4 years since I bought mine, but they weren't expensive

They are made to specifically fit the doors - they stick on the paint

No idea about anybody elses.

Got mine on for about two years. 4 pcs. They don't stick on the paint but are in the window channel. I'm pleased with them. Don't know how much they were and bought them from E...dotcom.

:) i recently got a set of climair wind deflectors, they fit into the window channel.Didnt really fancy the "stick on ones" too many light fingers knocking about.....Therefore i would definately recomend the climair ones.Bit pricey, but better than having to buy another replacement set and possible damage if some tw*t takes a fancy to them :) Have a look on their web site (climair.com) they also do one for the sunroof but not got one of those (yet) :)

How much damage do they do if they try and yank them out of the window channel?

The LR ones stick on and stay on, I have not been able to pull them off
you can just about see them in this picture - like "eyebrows" on the doors
