I've recently got a 94 300 auto and it's fine while driving but when its cold in the morning it won't move forward untill its warm. I know auto's are crappy and won't set the world on fire but no one would have bought one in the first place if It was this bad. I'm guessing start with a oil and filter change but is there anything else I should check?

do the oil first, it might take a couple of changes with a few miles in between, 4.5 litres each change usually, it will be a sticky valve but theres not much your likely going to do with that

Should I do the filter with every change?

Is it the same in both D or 1 selected, is your fluid level correct??.
If you believe your gear box fluid and filter needs to be changed then do it as it doesn't to difficult for a tdi from what I've seen in the workshop manuals.
You will get a good idea of the fluids condition buy looking at the colour and smelling the stuff on the dipstick, the filter is just a screen so nothing like an engine or air filter.
Auto gearboxes are not "crappy" just sometimes mated to unsuitable engine as in your case a 300 tdi, it's well known they are a better vehicle as a manual. :(

My 300 is the same its very slow to move off when cold but fine after a minute or two, ive done the oil and filter but made no difference, how many miles has yours done, mines at 216k so i think its just a bit tired but once warmed up its fine ive even towed a car on a trailer with it with no issues, so if its a high miler you may just have to live with it or i guess you could fit a lower mileage gearbox

Mine has only got 135k on it!

Have you sampled the oil yet ?
BTW Discool, I can't agree about 300TDI auto's, if they are in good shape they go very well, sold mine at 207,000m and the new owner is still driving it daily. It was just as quick as a manual, but far better for towing - esp horses. Their only downsides to them is fuel consumption and the TC locking up at 52mph not 48 - very annoying in 50mph speed limits. There is no way I would have swopped for a manual.

Have to agree Eight, autos are very good mine is quicker than a manual (my misses has one) and much nicer to drive, its economical too, and very capable off road, and of course no clutch to worry about.
