8 Spokes / Steel wheels 'reverse' mounting?

I've read in a couple of places now of people mounting steel wheels with flat mounting faces the 'wrong' way round (so you have a massive offset and dish facing outwards). I've often wondered if this was possible as I was going to give it a try on my vw bug (8 spoke wellers) but never got round to it.
Is it safe?

Have yu noticed how, on the outside of the wheel, the mounting positions are countersunk for the wheel nuts. Funnily enuf the insides arent. How do you proposed to bolt it up proper?

I've never had a decent look on a landy steel rim but the wheels on the bug (which look the same as the 8 spokes available to landy's) are flat where the wheel bolts/studs go through. It's basically just a dead flat plate with 4 lug holes and one centre hub hole in it, same from both sides.
I'm not trying to argue I'm just interested in why more people don't do it, as on the face of things it seems entirely possible and especially in the world of Volkswagens people are always aiming for more dish and offset.

Only reason I posted here was that I saw it written on an ebay ad for a set of standard disco steelies and it re-sparked my interest 'cause I saw a rangey parked up in weymouth the other day with what looked like wrong-way-round modulars on (crazy offset and dish that went on for miles).

You are much better off getting someone to 'flip the centres' on a set of old steel Disco rims.

As has been mentioned there is a countersunk bit around the wheel stud holes, this is so the nuts centre the wheel on the hub.

....unless you happen to be a K**kFit monkey....don't ask!

And the fact it looks stupid, a car park full of rusty old volkswagens with comedy wide wheels and stretched tyres on stupid cambers just looks daft and isn't safe to drive.

nah you gotta have wheels that deep that you need your entire socket set just to get the nuts off!

then, lower it so that the vibrations shake loose every single electrical connector, fit some lexus/smoked/LED lights, an your done!

unless your feeling really flash then you can put a big bore exhaust in it to, to reduce the gasflow rate so that it actually looses power! Now we're talkin!!

although in a way i suppose i can't talk abot LED tail lights...

Yeah, I'm sure they're not stop and tails which is why you can get a brake light, or a tail light but not both at the same time

if he is realy seious, couldnt he weld of the the old counter sunk holes then grind them flush, the drill it out again and then counter sink the other side cant think of the point o and then get it rebalenced as soon as poss.
