4x4 Response Volunteers?

It sounds a nice idea and a charitable thing to do for people who have 4x4s. The idea of helping out the local hospital and people in need.....

But, I've also heard some horror stories.


any thoughts, anyone???
 
As ex recovery-not a fecking chance.

i was a member of a 4x4 response group early this year when we had the bad weather, it was rewarding at first helping carers and people to work in the hospitals, when they realy could'nt get to work, also doing your bit for the comunity, but the down side is when the weather clears a bit and your haveing to get up at all hours and drive for miles to take someone home. I will help anyone out if i can but with the group i was with i was just a council taxi service.

I remember a thread on here years ago. Someone from here had wanted to join his local response group and he saw they had a stand at a local show. When he went up and introduced himself and said he wanted to join they turned their backs on him. Obviously the guys running it were a clique and just wanted the joy of running around in their 4x4's to look/feel important.

If you can find a decent group who are not cocks and are interested in helping people then why not?

If, I get a 110 I doubt I will be joining any group (I don't think there is one up here) but I would give my number to the plod and local NHS to offer my services in severe weather. However, I doubt the plod would accept my offer of help once they type my name into their fancy computer. :doh:

COTAG had a few members where I used to work (RAF Kinloss)

As far as I can see (other people said exactly the same thing last year!) If the weather gets too bad for the emergency services to cope, then the government will request MACP (Military Assistance to the Civil Powers) or MACA ( Same thing, but Civil Authorities)

This means that properly trained people, with properly equipped vehicles will go and do this sort of thing. it is government funded and uses military vehicles and personnel.

As far as I can see, if you go out as part of a response group, you are undoubtedly helping out the local community, but the government is happy to let you pay your money on fuel / kit / additional Business insurance etc.

Not my cup of tea, but i'd always stop and help pull someone out if they were stuck, just as Id always stop and help if I approached an accident.
 
West Midlands Ambulance Service have been asking for volunteers, mostly in the Coventry, Nuneaton and Warwickshire areas.

I just left my details with them.

My wife has left her details with our local major hospital, in that she'll help transport female nurse's to and from work if need be (from the Snowdonia area), she's the only one in our locale to offer so far ...
 
Rover Rescue has been operating for many years since I can remember helping out nurses ambulances and putting their Knowledge to good use. The thing is its hit and miss with these responce groups. some are good some are rubbish. There is no criteria for joining other than hell yea I'll do it and that usually employs cowboys. Watching some "response" guys at a pay and play doing some recovery techniques its easy to see why I would never join that particular group as it was down right dangerous and too many chefs in the kitchen trying to give their bit fecking things up. Also I fear that some of the organisers and many members of "some" response groups have a Plastic Plod attitude wants to run the world and believes THEY are there to rescue you/everyone.

Some other Response groups are great. For me Rover Rescue has been a low key men on th eground that know their salt that are willing to help everyone as and when. These are club members of a national club that again do recovery/competitive offroad driving/Racing every weekend so they are not numptys like a few 4x4 response have shown themselves to have been. Especially at our local pay and play.

You need at least some brain power to do a methodical, safe and successful recovery none of which were displayed by these guys at P&P practising (Hell even the yellow beacons were flashing at a Fookin P&P!) Have a word! I walked off in discust rope lengths vehicle positioning and lots of saftey issues aswell as loving the winch when a rope and somone with some sense would have done the job faster safer and with far less faffing.

Has 4x4response reached Gwynedd yet?? I know there was talk of having a NorthWales4x4Response group and there already a Powys response group. But haven't heard anything about Gwynedd

Well years ago the Ambulance men use to do our street theirselves. Not anymore though. Ive never seen a gritter up here in the 25 years I've lived here.

Not as far as I know, I just read on the beebs website that Ysbyty Gwynedd needed help so my wife volunteered. 4x4response do hold meetings in Llandudno I think... but from what I've heard it's mostly for the Clwyd area.
 
I'm sure some of the Herts guys will testify that If I think somthing is wrong I will walk away or if its dangerous tell the muppets where to go and do whats needed in a safe non damaging and in a timly manner. Lots of people shouting "advice" doesnt help. Nellys ditch incident needed somone to make decisions so I did and the job was done car out no damage and everyone went home safe.

Another one was a RR stuck at P&P I told the stuck guy to un do the "helpers" winch cable and I'd help but not if these muppets were in th earea. The Helper was reversing his wrecked disco snatching him backwards into a pile of dirt higher that his RRC crunching the corner in. A rope on the front and a decent couple of tugs had him up the cliff face and no damage done. I'm surprised these people get through the day its clear to anyone even a 5 year old that pulling a RRC backwards against a fooking cliff wasn't gonna work. Its all beyond me somtimes God help us if these people join a response team!

Thats bollox ain't it, the local councillors would soon complain if they or their family were in need of the 999 services and they could not get to them:mad::mad:
