4 litre jeep cherokee engine into 110 2.5td

Hi, Anyone know of anybody that has put an early 1990`s 4 litre jeep engine into a landy. There seems to be no end of engine possibilities that can go in. I`ve seen, hummer engines, bmw m5 engines so wondering if this is possible. It`s a basic engine, no fancy electronics, good power and torque.
Any info welcome.

No idea why anyone would want to put one of those things in a Defender. Even the Rover V8 is a far superior engine to that, but the best thing you could do would be to drop a Tdi in.
 
I am not sure which Jeep engine you are on about , but they used to run the same engine as Chrysler in Aus , a 245 hemi , they rev like hell, and are pretty bomb proof , used a lot in hot rod racing . I put one in a 110FC , tons of grunt and can handle the revs , unlike the Holden(Vauxhall/GM 6cyl) only about 14/18 mpg at best tho . You could buy a conversion kit in Aus . HTSH
 
Let's be honest, american engines suck. I have a neighbour with the exact engine you are talking about in their jeep and it gets 16mpg. When they put the caravan on the back it's more like 13/14. American engines are stupidly inefficient, no where near as powerful as a turbo diesel and its ridiculously large (I mean the physical size of the engine).
The simple answer is, yes, it will fit but will probably take some work... but why would you ever do that?

lexus v8 or Audi 4.2 v8 I'm considering all large engines chew fuel
 
My dad's Lexus LS400 with the old style 4.0 V8 32v gets about 25 mpg. Not too bad for a 250bhp lump in a heavy auto saloon imo!

throttle bodies etc and turbos are options as well
lexus soarer.
 
I might be a total beginner to all this but wouldn't there be far too much power from the big V8s you're looking at as well? You'd have to have a conversion kit/plate for the gearbox but there's no guarantee that and the gearbox could take the horsepower at high revs.
That's what I'd be wary of anyway.

For an engine conversion I'd be thinking along of the lines of a more TD5 or TDV6 (is it possible? I don't know) or some other kind of diesel V6.

Don't worry there's no power in those american engines :D A TD5 would rip the balls off of an american engine and then make it eat them :rolleyes:

True but I'd imagine he has something with a lot of power in mind at the very least.
 
Sorry about that, I thought you were still talking about stupidly big american engines that are amazingly less powerful than a european engine half their size.
It always amazes me how Ferrari can get over 120 bhp per litre out of an N/A engine but americans can't even seem to get 120bhp out of 4 litres. Am I missing something or are they just not very good at making cars? I can't see a reason for so little power from so much engine other than poor engineering. Same goes for mpg. I'm always amazed when I go to america when I see adverts boasting "25mpg on highways!!!" for a medium sized car. I can get 25mpg in town from all 2.7 tonnes of my grandma's disco 3 and 30mpg out of my 90. My dad's AUDI A4 S line goes like a bat out of hell and gets 45mpg at the same time. Can anyone educate me on this or are the facts as simple as americans can't make cars or engines?
