I’m posting this in both 300 tdi and 19j engine areas, for obvious reasons!

Currently I run a 1989 Landy 90 with a 19j 2.5TD engine, LT77 gearbox and 1.2 transfer box to suit.

Previously I ran a 1997 300 Tdi Discovery with R380 gearbox and 1.4 transfer box to suit ..

Both vehicles engines and drivetrains are basically bog standard, as are both chassis.

The 300Tdi engine needs working on, I know it runs, though it hasn’t ran for a while, but last time it ran the wiring loom in the Disco burnt out and I cba to fix the whole loom, but reckon with a basic loom, power, fuel and air source it’ll run. When it was running it was entirely reliable with good power and no issues.

The 19j is now starting to have issues, the turbo’s making a noise, I can’t stop it overheating though it’s always had and still has good power and torque for it’s age

So I want to remove both engines and swap them so that the 300Tdi is in the 90 as the Disco is going to be scrapped. Then I can re-work the 19j for another possible project or for sale.

So to my questions ..

What do I need to make a ’97 300Tdi Disco engine fit into an ’89 90 chassis? Do I need a gearbox mounting plate, engine mounts anything else?

Is it as easy as taking the 19j out, leaving the clutch, gearbox etc all insitu but changing the engine chassis mount plates to suit the 300Tdi and slotting it in the 19j’s place?

Would it be easier to remove the engine and gearbox as a complete unit from each and swap them out of the vehicle to then replace the 300 + LT77 into the 90 chassis as a whole engine/gearbox unit? This sounds easiest to me, but I’ve never done an engine swap on a Landy before.

Would it be easier or sensible to swap in the 300 Tdi + R380 and use the 90 transfer box, which I do intend to overhaul anyway? I run larger tyres on the 90 and wouldn't want an over geared Disco transfer box on it.

I have no worries about figuring out places to mount ancillaries like different airboxes, oil pipes, radiators etc etc, the major concern for me really is matching the engine to chassis and to gearbox correctly and securely/reliably. Not worried about wiring looms either, I intend to make the engine run on minimal wiring, no immobiliser etc.

Thanks, I’d appreciate any and all advice.

Trust me .. the info is mostly all here already, though mostly applying to 200Tsi engine into 90 chassis, so sorry for the inconvenience, please ignore the thread .. ;)

Keep the Lt77 it saves hasstle moving everything forward / chaning props. You have to either tap out some more holes or remove dowels I can't 100% remember which

Engine mounts on passenger side fine drivers side either needs a new mount on the chassis or a custom mount around the oil filter to fit on standard mounts (I have one ;) )

Radiator chop the front mounts and lower to fit standard 300 rad and intercooler

You can use the standard TD loom just change over the temp sender

Change the cambelt wgen yoh do it if it hasn't been done recently its so much easier doing it out of the vehicle.

Exhaust is simple shortening and matching up

Thats aboit it really the hoses have to be chopped and modded abit but you should be able to do it with the hoses you've got

Ive done a 300 and 2 200 converions so they can't be that hard :D

Cheers Ayresie ..

S3S16, not so sure you'd want my hoses after this weekend down Salisbury Plain .. but possibly yeah. Gonna do a head gasket change on it so I can use it in Wales in a couple of weekends but when we change engines it'll probably be for sale. I had it in mind for a project but it's not really feasible .. ;)
