yes ..allways centre out...torque by hand...its untill it feels right..

and as stated...re check after...strange things bolts and studs...u think tight, but 5 mins after they lose..though its to do with manifold getting lower as you torque it down, hense bolts getting looser...(excuse my spelling please)
 
I got the sump on ok and the valley gasket but what a fecker that inlet is.

bear in mind its a taller wider p76 block, we used two tubes of permetex for rear cap, front cover, sump and both sides of vally so was running short and only had there quick gasket maker left so had to be fast although it was only on about 5% of it as we ran out right at the end.

anyway the bastard part was the p76 inlets are known for being hard and im using p38 heads dont forget, we couldn't get 3 bolts one side and 1 the other side all the way in

They were stopping like 10mm short and were a total bastard to get started and that far
all this time the sealants cooking :eek: and so were we. I ended up using big nuts as spacers on those so we could torque it before the sealant dried. feck knows if it seated right- how cud u tell? also what am I gonna do to get this sorted lol? what are the normal p38 inlet bolts, are they different lengths? the holes are deep enough by far but still no go :( cud go shorter bolts but wonder if that manifold is seated ****ed now? with that much permatex it shud be ok ? all toqued up but not right

You should be safe to remove one bolt a time.
put something in the hole to see if your going to the botom of the hole or not. compared to your old heads. you could simply cut down the bolts or get new 8.8 bolts on the bay of the e.
All looks seated well. did your torque the bolts?
 
yes all torqued up, they were v hard to get started though. i put wire down the holes and they are deeper than the bolts so it makesno sense the me, you say 8.8?
 
it may be the same as the chevy.......


On newer TPI injection models the bolts are at a slightly different angle just down to the head design for the inlet ports. This means that old style manifolds don't fit perfectly without the use of a dremel to remove some of the material from the bolt holes.

I could barely get all of them in there, ended up just notching the inlet instead which wasn't ideal but it sorted the fit issue using the old inlet on a newer engine. Alls good til about 1/2 or 3/4 on some of them then the angle of the inlet to head just means they nip up against the side of the bolt hole and thats your lot
 
If it where me I'd run a tap down the holes to make sure the threads all good, its possible there not tapped all the way.
8.8 is the tensile rating for the bolt

You may be right doc as efi p38 heads on a 1973 engine
 
Skimmed P38 heads at that! I think I read some where the heads with smaller combustion chamber were effectively skimmer versions to compensate for the thickness of the gasket, rather than a change in casting the head making the chamber smaller. It being skimmed again might have brought a bit lower adding to the angle problem...

How much was the skim, a small amount just to resurface them or enough to add to the angle problem?

Not sure James Martin will know he had them done for me, what shall I do now, seems odd it was 3 in the middle one side and just one nearer the end the itv, maybe I am just worse casing it like I do lol- q is what's the next move. What size and thread are the bolts so I can get a tap?

asked a mate in engineering to see what he can find, somehow I ended up with an extra bolt ???? :p

I was also gonna ask on the valley cover and the p76 carb inlet one bolthole is a cut out slot in both rather than a hole, wtf is that for? :p
 
A mate rang to say the water pumps been welded, he said it was a ****e casting like an areo, that was a nos gen one too- no wonder it cracked he said. Pics to follow.
 
right got the waterpump tigged up, for a NOS I can say the casting was like an aero :eek:

well done landrover,no wonder it broke :( i wont be able to do up the 4 long studs through front cover and waterpump to block to the same 27ftlbs as the other front cover bolts, does that matter?will it load the others too much?

thanks mate, so many ancillery attached o the front cover as I have a/m a/c on this one too i was waorred about he rest of the bolts holding
