So I had fun & games on the M1 when my Disco 300TDi wanted to rev to destruction using its own oil for fuel.
I stalled it and then got it recovered.
My garage has now had the head off to survey the damage.
No.1 piston has lost its forward edge of the crown - you can see the skirt now.
The forward edge of the central well in the crown is also burned away along with the tit in the middle.

I took some pictures and showed a Diesel Engineer at work and his diagnosis tallied with the AA man's - leaking injector causing the melting until the oil & combustion gasses can pass through the piston.

Does this sound likely and if so do I need to avoid using any of the old fuel system on my new engine?

it is the most common ,fault of melted burnt piston,300s are getting old now so are injectors ,often people put it down to head gasket over heating.but is poor injector/s

Yes, the head gasket was perfect.
Does this mean the injectors should be avoided but the pump is OK?

Talking of the pump, my new engine is a 23L out of a Defender & has a pump with a black cap & harness running to an EGR module (EGR fitted). My Disco never had an EGR('94)
Can I just remove the cap, harness & EGR and use the pump?

pump shoul be okay ,i wouldnt use any of the injectors may be allright but not worth the risk, egr can be just left unplugged,no ned to remove anything from pump ,unless plastic cover over stop solenoid on rear of pump, which would need breaking off a single feed to stop solenoid fitting
