Hi Guys
Well it comes a time in every diesel NA's Life when you just gotta replace the old heart and its that time now for mine. Has anyone got a 200tdi laying about that they dont want too much for. Ive sen them on Fleebay but havnt realy got a lot to spare at the moment and the wife aint too happy about me spending even more on the old beast (Landy not the wife). I put new pistons and all sorts in last year so money spent in 2008 was quite a bit for a 20 year old vehicle. Timing chain gone now so its that time me thinks.

buy an old disco 200tdi and use it for the transplant. Also means you can change the transfer box for the disco one which has higher road gearing. You can then also break the disco and sell the parts, may even get all your money bak. They're going for abot 400quid, some for less

if anyone has got one youll be lucky to get a disco one for under £375,then you gotta buy the conversion pipe kit £175 plus other bits..i got a genuine defender 200 tdi on ebay for £700 thats for everything

aye but if he gets a disco he can sell axles gearbox transfer box etc and make most of his money back. You live to far south to appreciate the true value of disco's us northerners we only pay what their really worth. like this one that went last night. 1990 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 200 TDI RED 3dr NO RESERVE !! on eBay, also, Land Rover Range Rover, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 02-Jan-09 21:02:05 GMT)

dont forget you need more than just an enjun ;)

new clutch, exaust adaptor, power steering pipes, as your is a n/a you will need a rad with a oil cooler in :D

Its not a straight forward swap you need to move clutch pipes really and get extended oil pipes, extended Rad hoses, extended Intercooler hoses, new temp sensor, splice in the Disco Engine harness, lower the rad mounts, get a disco rad intercooler, the list goes on and on. Oh and the exhaust thats another £100 if you havent got a exhaust bender to hand. Plus you should really drill and tap and counter sink the lower bell housing to make it secure anyone not doing this is just bodging and not really making a good job of it.

Its not a diy for a non mechanic. Yes its been done by others, yes it works ish, but be wary of others some people destroy their cars to save £50 quid and a couple of hours work. There is a right way and many many wrong ways to fit a 200tdi into a 90/110. I did it in 3 days working solid with my Brother a land rover trained mechanic of 15 years and he has worked as a mechinic for donkeys years. We changed some bits for new items water pump, timing belt, and a new Genuine HD clutchetc. We got the oil hoses extended by pirtec. Getting the engine in is a piece of **** and very quick but its getting all the little bits tied up takes alot of time.

Jai

I reckon mine cost me about 500 quid and that was on the cheap I had bits lying around and a spare rangie TDi in th egarage for all the little bits. Some things aint worth bodging till you have money it will cost you a fortune in the long run.

I bet you wished you changed your timing belt when you did your pistons!

I've seen some people fit disco gearboxes with the gear leavers coming through the seat box rarther than the transmission tunnel ok it saves a few quid but thats Madness and looks like a right bodge job. Jai

you could go 300. I did, bought the entire discpo for £350, cost minus what i got 'back' outta it, prolly spent around £250 on it, an that includes welding gas/wire, etc. Search for 300tdi upgrade on here.

Or, search for Patmans thread 200tdi upgrade.

:)

ive heard all sorts of stuff about them both to be honest. People have said both are not as reliable, but no-one seems to know what fails on either of them.

You have to adjust the engine mounts for the 300, yes, but thats about an hours work. You don't need an expensive exhaust converter thingy, as the turbo elbow is more sensibly placed.

Its up to you - i chose 300 mainly cos one was there, but also because the exhaust whatsit is very expensive, and the 300 dnt need one, and the pipework appeared to be more straightforward - i only had to buy some fuel line, the rest i made up from the disco pipework and my old pipework, with one short piece of (new) exhaust pipe which i was given for the intercooler top hose.

It hasn't broken down on me yet! (In all of 3 months... :D)

I havn't done any welding for a few years so thats what is making me aprehensive towards the 300. I have been warned against the 300 as the 200 has a section between the block and the sump, this is supposed to stop all the oil splashing around the engine when you are off roading. I don't know how true this is though.

After working on 200 and 300tdi's I would recommend a 200.
I have pulled many 300's out of discos and replaced them with either 200's or isuzus. The bad ones just dont like being worked, if they get the slightest bit hot that seems to be game over, knackered head.
It could be a maintenance issue I dont know but when Land Rover developed the 300 they changed something significant and got it very wrong somewhere.
200's however dont seem to have any major weak spots, only the dreaded rocker half moon and breather oil leaks. and the disco turbo seals can fail if been used with old oil for a long time.
As for 300's being quieter and smoother dont believe it, they're not.
My 200 after its rebuild (disco motor) was the quietest, smoothest and quickest tdi I have ever driven.
All the good 300's i've come across have sounded awful, not to mention the idler pulley squealing!
I have never had one so maybe i cannot give a fair assumption but am stating what I know from experience with them.
200's are more common (although getting old now) and are cheaper to replace in the event of a complete disaster. Only heard of a couple and that was bad maintenance, cambelt failure.
Swings and roundabouts!
