does anybody know how to change a fuel pump on a 2004 defender 90 without removing the tank. Do any defenders have an access hatch? OR did anybody make an access hatch that would like to give me details of location etc.. pictures or sketches would be great. seems like my fuel tank is at the back and not below the drivers seat

Pump is towards the left side when standing looking in the back door - thats the passenger side on a righthand drive motor.
I'm assuming it would be exactly the same for a lefthand drive motor but hey.........

All measurements I used are detailed in the above thread but as in all things no two Defenders are the exactly the same size. Sorry no pics other than whats attached.

I suggest you cut a smaller hole and check location before opening it out to the final size. Some peeps have fitted gucci access panels and/or used round hole cutters but I used what I had hence the square hole.

I simply pop rivetted a small sheet of aluminium over the hole when I was done and as my tub is ply lined it cant be seen any how. If I need to get to the pump again I'll simply drill the rivets and Robs your Mothers Brother.

I drilled out every rivet in the floor panel, enough to lift it clear and see exactly where to cut... less chance of cutting tank... but needs careful drilling... also offers a good chance to cut the offending floor brace which runs over the pump.

I was left with a hole in my floor panel, so have put a chequer plate floor panel over the top... having cut a slightly larger hole in the chequer plate I now have an inspection plate, much like Shifty's, pop riveted to the original floor plate, leaving the surface all flush.

Fortunately i have the hole allready cut out in the back .
I am in the middle of changing the pump but locking it back into the tank is a complete pain, cannot get it to lock.

Always seems to be one of those things where it either slots and goes back together easy peasy or can be a complete PITA.

Just make sure the locking ring is not bent and try to locate it square on to the top of the tank.

Also, iirc I located the ring onto the tank without the pump in place the first time to make sure I have it aligned correctly, marked it where it had to be to start correctly then put the pump in.

Good luck.

Cheers

ensure locating tab is located and hold pump unit fully home with one hand, hammer shaft is not a bad tool for that then start locking ring

Correct me if i am wrong ,but the large round hard plastic that the locking ring drops over is stuck inside the locking ring should it be that way, thanks.
