Im thinking of buying a 90 td5 with 200,000 on the clock a good idea? I have test drove it and it pulls well and goes well engine sounds sweet. It comes with no paper work but a 3 month warranty and a full service... I have only ever had tdi,s and know that this mileage wouldn't worry me on a 300tdi if well serviced I'm going to spend around 6k on a 90and would prefer a td5 with the newer interior any advice welcome
Tom

td5s are long lasting engines,if serviced regulary as all ,but unlike 300tdi not readily rebuildable ,you have to get a used motor £1200-£1500 seems usual price i pay for a good one

Just make sure there are no signs of diesel in the sump oil. Wipe some oil from the dipstick on a kitchen towel and have a good sniff. Then wait for a few minutes and see if there is a distinct line of differing colours on the towel stain. Sump oil is darker than diesel and the kitchen towel separates the two. If you smell or see diesel then consider walking away or knocking at least £2k off the asking price as a rebuild or replacement TD5 engine is not cheap. Other than that they are good reliable long lasting engines IF serviced regularly. I have seen more than a few that have done over 250k miles and still running strong on original turbos and injectors.

That's a good trick, we've got one with suspected diesel in sump so this will be a good way to check
