1980 88 drive problem

Can anyone help.
I’m a new Landy owner of a 1980 88 2.25 Diesel. On Sunday as I was driving it slowed then the back wheels locked and I skidded to a halt.
The RAC came and the mechanic said it was my rear diff. Once I got it home I removed both the rear drive shafts and the rear prop. I hoped I could then use it in 4x4 with front wheel drive but when I put it in gear it still isn’t moving? The front prop turns but no drive...does this mean the front diff has gone too? Any help or advise will really be appreciated.

Have you got free wheeling front hubs?

I can free wheel in neutral yes

Free wheel hubs! see attached.
Possible front halfshaft snapped or diff .

Free wheeling hubs allow you to disengage the halfshafts when you're in 2WD. Nothing to do with neutral

I’m not sure as I say I’m new to this. How can I find out

Go out side & take a photo of the front axle. Make sure we can see the ends where the tyres attach.
We can then tell if you have FWHubs

Picture needs to be a little closer , centre of front wheel looks like it might have selectro free wheel hub.
Is it the same as your back wheel hub?

No the front is chunkier

Twist/rotate these to engage then try

Ok great is there a certain way ie clockwise etc.

You will only be able to turn them 1 way. Unsure what it is on your make.

As simple as that! Thank you so much and I’m learning every day.
Off to the garage on Tuesday to fit a new oil pressure gauge and rocker cover gasket to stop some of the oil leaks and hopefully to let me know if it’s the rear diff or not.
Dou you have any good supplier names or number you can share as I want to bring her back up to a good standard.

Quick tip, don't use 4WD with the front hubs in free wheel mode, it's a good way to damage them
