REALLY clean out the case. Paint brushes and parafin, rags, and blow it out with an airline (with eye protection..easy to forget). When I had to chisle the liners out of my engine block I wrapped everythig in clingfilm but still bits got stuck. I spent several hours doing nothing but washing and air blasting every crevice in the block. At the first oil change I ran a magnet probe around the sump, not a single chip. Its worth putting a lot of effort into getitng it free of debris.

Well I’m only going to be doing this at home so no air hose I’m afraid. Would the shrapnel have gotten into where the half shafts go? If so how do I clean through the axle??

Diff arrived today. Now all I’ve got to do is clean it all out and fit it. Do I clean off the drive shafts and re grease them? I’m a bit worried about the clean out as this is new to me but I really want to do it myself.

Cleaning the drive shafts is the easy bit, just wipe them clean (brake and clutch cleaner by the 5l bottle is my favourite stuff, and get the special spray bottle while you're at it). No need for grease, they get lubricated by the axle oil.

For the casing I'd add that a large old fashioned bottle brush would be a useful weapon.
