I'm sure I remember seeing that there was a 12v auxiliary socket available as an optional extra that fitted in the back of the console between the seats. Is 12v available there or would I need to run an extension from somewhere else?

As far as I recall, back in the days of the first FLs the top models had a rear ashtray with a cigarette lighter socket in the rear of the centre consul.

My first FL in 2002 certainly had this and I used it for fridge, pumps etc. :D

My current FL a 2004 HSE did not have one. :( The rear of the centre consul has nothing at all.

I have a LR option kit fitted behind the rear seats on the nearside, just below the roller cover thing. :D

It picks up power from a junction box behind the panelling, even further back just ahead of the rear light cluster. :)

Hope this helps. ;)

the wiring is there already, if you unscrew the cubby box and take it out you will see a white connector with purple and black wires running from it, this is the connector that would hook up to the 12v aux socket and is already live and fused. i managed to pick up a centre console with the socket/ashtray option (fitted as standard to es/hse models) but fi you can't find one just get a 12v socket and away you go :)

My 1998 Xei has the early centre console without the cubby box and had a rear 12v socket. Wiring should be there under the console :)
