Hi folks,

Can anyone help or advise?

I have a 7 year old 110 CSW td5 - have owned since new. Have done 65,000 miles. This problem was first apparent at 40,000.

Approaching 50 mph on smooth roads a very strong shudder sets up in the front wheels. Accelerating through or slowing down sharply eliminates it. It is gone completely by 60mph. The shudder can also appear whilst cruising at say 75 or 80 if you hit a rough bit of road surface. Again, sharp acceleration or deceleration clears it. She'll cruise smoothly for many miles if no rough surface.

I've twice had the wheels properly balanced, the alignment checked and set, and the horizontal shock-absorber replaced. There was no major balance or alignment problem apparent and the old shock-absorber was fine.

Visual checks don't reveal any obvious problem.

Any ideas? All thoughts much appreciated.

We had wheel shudder on our 110 Tdi (1998), checked the tyres for worn areas, all evenly worn, then I changed the steering damper, .................. that was 5 months ago, ....... no wheel shudder since !!
