Hi I picked up my new (well new to me) 101 ambulance In Edinburgh yesterday to drive back down to Devon. All was going swimmingly until i got about 80 miles from my start point when i heard a slight brief grating/grumbling sound. A further 2 miles with nothing then a very unhealthy sound and no gear selection. Luckily there was a lay-by i coasted into. The AA came out and said something was up with the transfer box. When i try to go into 1st she just grinds. I can put her in reverse no probs. Anyway 4 AA truck relays later and i end up in Devon 16 hours after i started out. Its a bank holiday so i can't get anyone out to look at it. Any ideas chaps?

Yes selects fine. When i let the clutch out it sounds like its not meshing. When i put her in reverse...no probs.

This one yes (plz forgive my ignorance I'm still learning)

So just phoned Torquay transmissions who said "Right well, we'll just put in another gear box. It'll be £700 plus labour":eek::eek:

That silicon does look mighty fresh....reckon you been sold a lemon.
Take one bite of it and screw your face up

Kizzeh, you can make gin and tonics if you got Lemons :)

Dr.Evil found a great landy place in Ashburton. Old feller in there been fixing Landys for past 50 years. He just said "sounds simple enough, just bring her in" Result!

The best kind,

But if you bought a 101, buy a toolkit to go with it, theyre old motors, and need alot of tlc (but thereagain, doesnt every landy :) )

Tho I'm officially jealous a 101...

Well i was surprise when i looked at the sump as there was no oil leaking, could this be a real land rover? Im thinking i might install a small oil tank above the engine that leaks so when anyone looks under it it looks like its leaking and thus a proper landrover ;) And she may be old but she is in better nick than most vehicles out there apart from the current problem :der:
