Me again - really need some help...

Just been catching up a bit here. Some good advice and for my twopence worth suggest note the following:

Your dizzy does not have points - it is an electronic ignition system.
Viscous fan; left hand thread 1 1/4" spanner does the job.(32mm).

Overheating; probably radiator. Do not use a pressure washer to clean the fins you'll rip it to pieces. Use a normal garden hose and a soft nylon brush. When the outside is clean and clear use the garden hose to reverse flush as mentioned earlier.

Right now ignition timing. you said something about engine speed not being affected by advance/retard on dizzy - this is because the ECU is activating the stepper motor (idle air stabilisation valve) to try and keep tickover at or about 700rpm +/- 50 rpm.

Follow the instructions in Rave. Set your timing static then fire the engine up, disconnect vacuum advance and plughose, connet timing light and then see where the timing is - from memory you should be looking for 6 degrees before top dead centre; I might be wrong on that figure so please check. Manually advance/retard dizzy to get the right dynamic timing as per RAVE. you will know when it is right - from idle speed, yank the throttle open and it should pick up instantly and smoothly. It should then quite quickly settle down to a smooth idle again.

Hope that is of assistance.

If it's only doing it under load my money is still on the radiator being at fault. Have you taken it out and checked it yet?
well what can i say where do i start, called into see tigger tonight with my spare dizzy for him to look at,his disco is purring like a sewing machine (part from exhaust manifold chuffing a bit) now the real question is how much air can pass through a concrete block and what cooling effect would it have as his rad is doing a ferkin good impresion of one:doh: more dirt in the fins of that than in the house of commons expense book......
ok he can take the p..s now cause was driving me saxo when i called in:eek:
ps note to red he made me a cuppa but no biccies and not allowed in on the carpet

Having suffered the wrath of salisbury mud blocking a radiator myself, it doesn't surprise me. When I washed the mud out of my rad it looked like I had washed the entire landy with the amount of mud on the ground. I bought a radmuff for my TD5 as I know they aren't as forgiving when overheated. I spoke to Buckshot earlier and he also washed stupid amounts of mud out of his rad today.

yeah so I feel a bit daft.. was getting confused between blocked rad and dirty rad in my head.. but I know what I'm looking at now so will pop to halfrauds for spanner tomorrow and take the rad out on Sat for some tlc.. gonna do the oil change as well then..

test drive Sunday and will update you then... proper test drive on Wednesday when I have to drive to Manchester.. otherwise I'll end up having to take the work prius.. ewwww

thanks for popping over Jim.. good to have a second pair of ears on the lump.. but I'm still gonna invest in a timing lamp and keep working on that timing.. wanna get it perfick.. and they really aren't that expensive on fleabay anyway... and I'm sure I will have reason to buy it again..

and as the ex reminded me while Jim was here once the discovery's fixed I have an alfa head to remove... joy of joys...

ere tigger, you know i live in manchester so dont forget your passport, else you might not get in.very carefull bout things like that up here.:p;)

Are you sure the rad aint blocked.....

......Can you see through the fins clearly? My money is on fecked rad.

well I wish I'd taken that bet...

thanks again to all .. Boomer on the phone tonight and getting the rad off and cleaned out was discussed however....

thermostat in a pan of water and no movement until the water boiled.. so thermostat left out for run to Kernow in the AM and everything crossed... have had a run out in it tonight and temp doesn't rise above normal until I keep it at about 4000 revs.. which I wont be doing with the caravan on the back.. so although still everything crossed and still have to get that timing sorted I am ready to trust it for the drive..

If it's only doing it under load my money is still on the radiator being at fault. Have you taken it out and checked it yet?

COUGH COUGH!!!!

Did you take me up on my bet in the end?:D:D:D

lol Ratty.. no not yet.. and I aint counting any chickens till Saturday anyway...

any handy helpful hints for taking rad off.. gonna drain the oil before I start cos it needs changing anyway so presumably there's no issues with the oil cooler.. unless the threads are knackered like they were on the ATF oil cooler.. and have had top and bottom hoses off before..

is it OK to drain coolant with engine warmish after I drain the oil as I prefer to drain hot oil rather than cold???

cos it'll be hot??

might pop to Wickes' when I'm at it and get a domestic bleed thingy to replace the current placky bung.. seem to remember reading that somewhere..

yup - coz yu can scald yoself and a sudden release of pressure can make the water boil in the block, turn to steam and yu then have a jet of scalding water and steam erupting from the bit yu just undundid.

radiatpr bleed thingy - yup - one on radiator..... dunno if the v8 has any on the thermostat cover, live the 300TDi.
