All, please can you help. I have a 2004 RR Vogue TD6 and its buggered. Its been into LR and they have replaced the injectors, this hasnt solved the problem and they are now saying that they are going to charge me £1200 labour to dismantel the engine to discover what it could be.

They gave me a heads up that if it couldnt be fixed then it would need a brand new engine which would be multiple thousands.

My question is does anyone know a good garage that could swap the engine out for me up North? Chester, Wirral, Liverpool or Manchester ideally. Although happy having the car sent anywhere to be done.

Please help, the wifes in tears!

Alex.

Andy, I heard a pop like a missfire. It was then knocking loudly when idle and lost most power.

I have just been on the dealers again and they said the have run a compression test and the number 6 cylinder is reading nothing. 1-5 are ok but six is buggered. They are saying it could be a number of things from a cracked cylinder head to a bust piston.

I am not familiar with this engine, but that does sound like a possibility.

Personally I would find a good engine rebuilder in your area. They are more likely to have the expertise and lower labour rates.....possibliy even a flat fee for the job.

if i was you i would look at this guy on fleebay, 350 labour and around 1500 quid for a new engine!!! less than 2k and its sorted. thats if youve got the cash spare. if not youre looking at an unknown amount for a rebuild. also you can flog then engine you have to recoup a bit of cash

Range rover turbo diesel engine TDV6 on eBay, also, Jeep, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 08-May-09 20:44:31 BST)

Around £1500? I thought the ad said FROM £1650 for the engine alone & there was no mention of whether this included the dreaded VAT or not. I think less than £2k total with fitting & all vat etc. is possibly optimistic though I hope not.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems & hope you get sorted soon. For what it's worth, maybe it would be a good idea to get the head removed by a small independent garage to see if your own engine can be repaired within your budget.

that was a quick search and having no idea how diesels work or any real desire to find out i thought maybe he could get an engine and lob it in pretty easily. after all it should only take a couple of days to do himself even if he has never done one before!!

i light of the diagnosis from the dealer on cyl 6 is there any way to find out if its pressurising water ways or crank case? matbe tell if piston n rings or cylinder/head crack??

i would assume the pistons would leak to the crank and the water ways would be the head or block???

as ive said i know nothing about diesel, xcept that if you put cooking oil in 50/50 with diesel it smells of doughnuts and i love doughnuts!!!!

alex i have just put my rr in to have engine rebuild at ealesmere engines quated £1000 to £1500 would you like the number?

Hi all, thanks for all your messages it is greatly appreciated.

I have an update. I had the car towed from LandRover to a dealers. THey have stripped it down and told me that there has been some schrapnel in the engine that has damaged the head and piston, this has bent the cam rod. All alien to me unfortunatly. The chap said that he cant order pistons from landrover and they dont have any engines available. He has found a second hand one for £2500 plus vat which has done 30k but is a full unit. He will only use the altinator and starter motor from mine. The job in total will be £4500 all in.

Anyone any idea what my options are. Currently on my honeymoon hence the slow reply, not a happy missus and not a great time to try and find £4.5k to fix the car!!!

j the range. Would love the number, do you think they would be able to help with mine though with the bust parts?

Thanks again all!

why cant they order the parts? Also where did the shrapnel come from in the first place.Seems a bit steep to me.Main dealer?

No, independant dealer.

Aparrently you cant order these parts for the RR2004 - No codes for them to order as parts from LR I was told!? Shrapnel sounds like it was an injector tip.

Well, Gavs quote is certainly much less than £4.5k so that would probably be well worth looking into now. I don't think I would ever spend £4.5k on a secondhand engine unless it was some rare classic car.

Whoever does the job, tell them to have the turbo out and check it very thoroughly - they jam the variable vanes as well as chewing the turbine blades when bits of engine make a fast exit. When they do this they still make boost but cant control it via the vanes.

if i was you i would give that fella a ring, the link is still valid but heres his number: 01708 554554

you have nothing to loose by getting a quote. the quote you have for 4.5k is 2k labour!!! i could change the engine in a couple of days, now that would eqate to around 500 to 1000 a day!!! even a main dealer cant justify that kind of cash!!!

find out what parts you need and write a letter to landrover, if it is parts of the engine that have fell apart and caused damage they may even want to inspect it and may sort something out for you. i doubt it will be free but its worth a try for the sake of a stamp!

Thanks all.

Gav, took you advice and dropped that chap on ebay an email for a quote - Only problem is is that its the other end of the country - my luck continues.

Do you know who or where I should write to at Landrover?

Cheers mate. Alex.

i'd personally start with the md but then i always go for the top!!! trouble is i'd end up telling him what a shower of **** his cars are!!!

Good effort, cheers mate.

I think it might be worth noting that having bought the car privately I had a health check and a full service done by LR - 4 weeks later its buggered. No call back from the health check so I couldnt buy the warrenty in time. LR told me to go to an indie otherwise they would charge 10k!

Looking back I dont think I have been treated altogether fairly.

Thanks for the advice. Will pen a letter once home from Honeymoon.....

Will do, I think we will be replacing the lot. Seems a lot of waste though to be honest.

You think the engine is worth anything afterwards?
