Factory Xenon Headlights retrofit Programming the ECU

Hello lovely hive mind - hope you are all running smoooooth. I'm fitting Genuine Factory Xenon Headlights (retrofit on my 2007 FL2) and I've been told they'll need Programming with a laptop into the ECU.

Is this true? and anywhere in the Wrexham area got the gear? Cheers in advance.
 
You'll need to program the BCU to let it know that xenon lights are fitted. You'll also need to fit the load sensors to the front and back struts, and the headlight washers if not fitted.

If you own a modern LR and plan to do your own maintenance, then you need a decent diagnostic reader and programmer. I'd recommend the IID BT tool from Gap Diagnostics. It's a brilliant device that allows you to configure a modern LR to do pretty much whatever you want, like add Xenons and a million other things that not even LR can do.

I have owned an IIDBT for 18 months and don't recognise your description of it when used with a Freelander 2. You have to be careful of describing it like this for use with the Freelander 2 as Gap haven't spent the same amount of time on it as other vehicles it covers. I got caught out by this and it cost me £405. That’s a lot of money to spend when you find yourself in this situation. I did talk to them briefly before buying but I thought they were just being cautious. They weren’t. They admit most of their sales comes from the larger LR products which is why the Freelander 2 options are reduced. I guess it's why the Disco Sport isn't covered anorl. I was given special access to the "untested list" options when I asked for it to see more live data but was advised to use it with caution. The majority of items in there either don't work or report a value which isn't feasible. I did offer to help them with testing in order to make the product better on the Freelander 2 but they didn't take that up. Bit surprised as I gave them a link to my youtube which if full of Freelander diagnostics. I guess they may have their own plans.

Cheers but I can't justify the cost of one of those devises sadly

It can be done but not easy. Yer need to make a change to the CCF car configuration file. Cars these days use a look up table to see how they should work. Some of the feaures are hard coded using the VIN number anorl. For eggsample a car knows what engine it has by reading it's own vin plate. The computers then know to run in a certain way. The setting for the lights is in the CCF and needs changed or they will play up and probably either not illuminate or flicker or be wrong somehow. You need to change the option in the CCF so the car knows you have xenon's fitted. Not a mod I have done but some have. you will need to tell yer insurance anorl.

I had a surprise wait today so I had a look in my CCF using an IIDBT and couldn't see the headlight option. Regardless of that yer still need the power wash headlights and the leveling gadgets fitted which sit just inside the 4 wheels. That will need wired anorl and the computer which does the auto self leveling will probably be missing anorl I guess. I don't know if the wires are already fitted and tucked away. FL2's with xenon's have a larger water bottle for the windscreen/light wash but yer may be ok with what yer got. But as said the power wash will need fitted anorl or it will fail mot's. Same for leveling. There's a lot of conjecture about this on the web as some argue it will/won't fail... and dates when rules came in etc. There are also some who buy after market lights which somehow bodge in an xenon setup without auto leveling. As said it's not something I have done.

yes thank you - CCF gotcha - I already have the headlamp wash but was going to give the auto levelling sensors a miss to be honest

I think there's a risk you will blind oncoming drivers if the xenon's are too high. I remember some years ago someone like the AA or Petrol Prices warned about retro fitting without the leveling. Oncoming driver was blinded and crashed into the xenon car.

Hopefully someone who has done the mod will appear by magic and tell us how easy it is.

It would be interesting to know if the retro fit kits have the correct type approval on them for use in the UK.
