P38A Starter motor

Am I right in thinking there are just the 2 types of starter motor for the p38? The v8 one and the one for the diesel, ERR5445? Any other permutations? Think the early v8 ones were Lucas but switched to something else later, possibly Bosch. Think all the diesels had Bosch ones?

Wondering because on the manual diesel the clutch pipe support bracket sits either side of the lower starter bolt.

When I sourced one it was pricey That’s why I **it myself when I took a 6series off. It worked so I forgot about it

Try marrying it up without this bracket first -

I forgot to put it on first time, and would have thought it didn’t fit if it wasn’t same unit. There is plenty of room though? As long as (green) locator pin and bolts match up

Mine is off a BMW car with M51.

As far as I know all Diesel P38’s were fitted with same unit - only oem/aftermarket variations - not used by LR themselves. I would expect them to use Bosch

Yes, was sent the wrong one but ordered another. Then it occurred to me there might be other variants I am not aware of.

You may want to document this as there is squat regarding M51 SM in search bar (30 old threads no answers) and I only documented a zero cost refurb a little (as that’s all I did). I know Wammers got the answers coz he helped me
When someone searches in future you will be the main 2.5 man that comes up as most available threads are short-term members from 2008 not seen since.

I'd hazard all derv starters are the same.

As standard they are, but buying is weird. Mostly rebuilds or other branded makes

For example mine is from an M51 525, it fits in, gears are same, works fine but is slightly smaller in size somehow??. Hella do the 525 ones - not cheap new

Mine is from a 525 and I was worried at how small the starter is next to the LR unit, it also had a smaller guide keyway which I had to widen up to mate up with the ol' bus because it didn't sit flush otherwise. I am guessing LR had their reasons for making their starters huge, but I've been using mine for a number of years now and so far so good... maybe the fact the road car version has lasted so long just shows how little I use my P38 for what it was made for?

Yes a little select get together on a friends farm that i have been doing a bit of plumbing on.

All i know is if anyone buys a new EER5445 from Rimmers they need their bumps felt. £747.58 plus a returnable exchange deposit of £192.00. How these bloody idiots ever sell anything at their prices defeats me.
