Good evening, the collective brains of Landyzone… having got fed up with my Range Rover and it’s ever present Trans Prog Fail, I recently acquired a 1969 Series 2a - petrol 2 1/4 , hoping to repeat the joys of owning my SIII some 20 years ago. Tears of joy on that long first drive home soon turned to tears of frustration a day or two later when it subsequently failed to start. I get a solid click, but no turning of the starter. Started working through the system.. a couple of chaffed cables, a couple of loose terminal nuts all sorted. Battery voltage good, good volts on the start solenoid. But no improvement..
I’ll be taking the starter out, but everything seized, so while the WD40 works it’s magic I’m asking for advice.
it looks odd to me, a sort of hybrid. A modern solenoid is fitted to the bulkhead and wired up, but it looks like another cylindrical solenoid mounted on top of the starter motor…. I know there are a few different types, petrol, diesel, pre-engaged, maybe a military spec/24v.
please see attached photos - does anyone have any idea which it is? I cant quite make out the numbers of the case. Hopefully it will eventually come out intact, and I’ll work out what it is, and whether to replace or repair….
Thanks in advance… first of many questions I’m sure!
