Good evening, the collective brains of Landyzone… having got fed up with my Range Rover and it’s ever present Trans Prog Fail, I recently acquired a 1969 Series 2a - petrol 2 1/4 , hoping to repeat the joys of owning my SIII some 20 years ago. Tears of joy on that long first drive home soon turned to tears of frustration a day or two later when it subsequently failed to start. I get a solid click, but no turning of the starter. Started working through the system.. a couple of chaffed cables, a couple of loose terminal nuts all sorted. Battery voltage good, good volts on the start solenoid. But no improvement..

I’ll be taking the starter out, but everything seized, so while the WD40 works it’s magic I’m asking for advice.

it looks odd to me, a sort of hybrid. A modern solenoid is fitted to the bulkhead and wired up, but it looks like another cylindrical solenoid mounted on top of the starter motor…. I know there are a few different types, petrol, diesel, pre-engaged, maybe a military spec/24v.

please see attached photos - does anyone have any idea which it is? I cant quite make out the numbers of the case. Hopefully it will eventually come out intact, and I’ll work out what it is, and whether to replace or repair….

Thanks in advance… first of many questions I’m sure!

If thats a solenoid on top of the starter that’s a later model. Could be a 200tdi(they do fit)

Re build solenoid on top this throws the starter gear out & engages power.this is normally the problem

Other solenoid in photos is for the S2 starter motor.

The starter is one from a diesel model [pre engaged type that has a solenoid on top] Petrol models have a "bendix" starter operated from the "new" old type remote solenoid you have.
For the starter you have to work its solenoid has to operate but it does not need the "new" one.
I would change that old starter for the correct type.

Thanks everyone, so I discovered the engine is a 361xxxx 5 bearing, and the starter seems to be a Bosch with LR number NAD10039, don’t think it’s the pre-engaged type as the pinion slides up and down on the shaft. And both the power in to starter, and the “trigger” are both daisy chained from the bulkhead solenoid.. found some more chafe on the positive cable insulation too. So some new cable required, and now it’s time to bench test it!

The 5 bearing engine came in the late 70's so I recon Hicap phill is correct the starter is a later pre engaged and the solenoid moves a lever that slides the gear along the shaft to engage with the flywheel gear, an instant later the motor is switched to run. The solenoid on the bulkhead is not needed.
All it needs is power cable direct from batt to starter and a small cable from the ignition switch or start button to the spade on starter that when powered excite's the solenoid to do its stuff.
Same starter on 10j,12j, 19j, and 200's I recon.
