The idiot is me
Can somebody give me a step by step guide to replacing a safari door window on a 1996 Defender. I just got a new door
After I remove the aluminium strips does the glass just lift out?
Fitting it to the new door do I
1. Fit glazing strip (not sure what this is :()
2. Apply sealant (what one?) to door (or glass too?)
3. Press glass against the sealant
4. Fit ali strips around glass (somebody mentioned taping strips to glass before pressing into sealant.

From these questions the more discerning amongst you might have thought "This guy is clueless" You would be right but I am keen to learn :)

Pick up phone.... Dial local windscreen company.... Pay someone to do it that knows what they are doing. Simples.

Seriously, by the time you have bought a tube of windscreen sealer and got it everywhere you may as well get someone to do it. If you were local to me i would do it for you, but you are bloody miles away !

The glass will be stuck in place by silicone sealer.

You need to unscrew the ali retaining strips around the rear screen and then gently bang the screen around the outside to break the silicone seal. (keep one hand holdin the sceen in place while you do it).

Once the old screen is removed clear the remnants of sealer from the ali retainers and glass. (if you were using the same door you need to remove the sealer from that too).

When I've fitted rear windows to my defenders I've used black roofing sealer or RTV. I've simply put a bead around the door frame and pushed the window into place and then screwed the retaining strips on.

If you get any excess sealer splurging up past the door edges, a wet finger wiped around the outside will neaten it up.

ratty - thats a great help.Thank you. Think I might try it myself after all.
I noticed the ali strips look pretty corroded - the bottom one has a crack half way across. Can't seem to find replacements on Paddocks etc (only found one set on ebay £104!!). Does anybody know a part number so I can try to track this down (hopefully cheaper than £104)

glass retaining strips are bottom 333032 , sides x2 333033 ,top 333034 ,corners x2 333035,swcrews ab606031l,sealing strip 78159 ,still nead sealant too

Tis an easy job, if you want to get your hands dirty on your landy then this is a simple place to start!

I'm in the process of making one good door out of two

Be careful taking the glass out, 3 of the screws in the bottom strip were chewed on mine so I had to drill them out, it'd be easy to catch the glass and shatter it

It took me a while to get it out but I didn't fancy using an angle grinder near the glass

Just go slowly
