Hi Lads,

Well delighted with my new purchase but there are a couple things that need doing (its a landy i was expecting some work!!) they are as follows:

1) Leaking fuel Tank - when i stuck fuel in after purchase it came our the side of the top of the tank looks like maybe the seals are gone? no sign of a breech on the tank. is this common?

2) spongey brakes - pads on front drums on rear, the hand brake isint working mechanic says he reckons the shoes need doing. but my question is this. when i brake 1st time its slowing but now completely if i lift off and press again the peddle is much stiffer and the braking is much better. anyone know what that might be?

3) broken wiper stalk - does rave show how to change this?

Thanks lads, hope im not asking too many obvious questions

fuel tank - sounds like possibly the joints splitting or the hose isnt on right - you do know not to "brim" the tank right ?

the hand brake is completely separate to the rear drums - its a transmission brake.

your brakes could be any number of things either a leak somewhere , the master cylinder is allowing bypass , you have air in the system, warped disks

ps you have driven one before and are not just mistaking land rover brakes for non working brakes right ?

Wiper stalk is easy to replace but you will find Busters photo guide very useful.

It shouldn't be too difficult to see where the fuel is leaking from.

There was someone on here recently who said his fuel tank breather pipe was completely missing, so filling it up meant he just poured diesel all over the underside of the wheel arch.

As topdrive says, your handbrake and foot brakes are separate systems. The hand brake is a drum brake attached to the propshalf directly under your centre seat/cubby box. It stops you from rolling by stopping the propshaft from turning.

Your foot brakes sounds like air in the system. Top up the fluid to the max line and if that doesn't fix it bleed the brakes.

leak can often be poor seal on sender unit, under seat, adjust rear drum brakes as worn creates long pedal travel ,hand brake has adjustment on bracket bolted to t/box ,cutting half handle off and putting slit in bihex( 12 sided)19mm cheap combination spanner, access under center seat, wiper stalk just unscrew screws underneath steering column trim remove and unscrew switch from bracket and pull plug

Remove the base of the drivers seat, then the panel underneath and all will be accessable from there for the fuel tank and the handbrake.

Lift up the base and slide forward, then a couple of bolts at the front of the panel to remove.

It's 2nd guessing on the fuel tank until you get a look at where it's coming from.

Does the handbrake pull up at all? Does it have any feel to it? Check the linkages from the handle to the drum on the transmission, again these are all easily checked via the panel beneath the drivers seat.

As for brakes, sounds like an air issue, on the 2nd push down your pumping up pressure so from that it points to air in the system or low fluid, easily check for fluid via the resevoir on the left hand side of the engine bay.

If the brakes go hard on the second press it will be adjustment on the rear drum brakes, the first press takes the play out of the system.

Have you thought to check the front wheel bearings or disc's ?? if the bearings are loose they will spread the pads slightly when you drive, when you press the pedal it takes up the slack, same can happen when the disc's are slightly warped.
Best think is to adjust the rear drums. Loosen of the hand brake cable before adjusting the brake shoes and re set cable. Might also be worth changing the brake fluid this should be done ever 2 years anyway

Don't think you understand mate the hand break and rear brakes are very seperate!!!

DICK!! i never said the hand brake shoes were on the rear drum. I have adjusted hundreeds of the ****ers i know where they are.
I said adjust the rear drums. never mention do the hanbrake while you were there

wow, thanks for all the help lads.

the mechanic is looking at it today. you can pull the hand brake all the way up and nothing there. he says its been adjusted to the last but nothing there, he reckons the handbrake shoes are worn, no to be fair he hasent removed the handbrake drum he's just guessing. he then foolishly rang the main stealer for the shoes for the hand brake was quoted €65?? how much are they on island 4x4 ? a full set of rear shoes are £24!!

I would say you need to look at air getting in to the system for the brakes. It could be something more complicated like the brakes needing to be adjusted, but I'd check the system for sufficient fluid + leaks and bleed it just to be sure.

The hand brake cable may have snapped, or the adjustment on the drum may have simply loosened off over time, to the point where the hand brake doesn't even come close to stopping you. It happened to mine!. I'd recommend removing the plate underneath the centre seat if that's available and then you have easy access to the adjuster. You have easier access to the cable and the adjustment for the cable itself by removing the plate under the drivers seat though. You should probably look at adjusting the hand brake rather than the cable. The adjuster is the square/tapered thing at the bottom of the front side of the hand brake drum. The main thing you need to know is that the adjuster doesn't just screw in and out, as you rotate it, I think it's a kind of cam that pushes the brake shoes out to either side and then as you continue to rotate it loosens off again, so as you do 360 degrees, you go back to square one almost. As you're turning it, it tightens and loosens and tightens again and so on! I'd say getting a reasonable stop on a hill with 4 clicks is quite a good adjustment, pulling it tight on 6 clicks. Make sure you drive it and that the drum doesn't get too hot. You may have to loosen it off if it does.

thanks for the help lads, mechanic had no joy with the hand brake, he reckons its the shoes not the cable.

took off the plate under the seat to get access to the tank and all is good there, no sign of leaks or anything. the leak is coming from the side where the i cant see (close to the door sill) mechanic says he cant get the tank out with out sheering some of the bolts and needing a new tank holder. i think ill just order a new tank and holder and be done with it.

will get him to bleed the brakes next week and see what up with the other brakes
