White smoke and stutters after cold start

Hmm, interesting discussion which developed I see whilst I wasn't around :) So the glow plugs were changed, but it still smokes a bit until its warm, so clearly that wasn't the issue. Timing position - excuse my ignorance but can you just explain a bit more? It's just so that when I speak to...

White smoke and stutters after cold start

Agreed, seems like it's the glow plugs which could be the most likely culprit. Why would in the loom need to be changed though?

90 Td5 white smoke when starting from cold and no revs?!!

Joe, I'm having a similar problem as yours, infact it's identical. Did you resolve this?

White smoke and stutters after cold start

Hi all, it's been a while since I posted here! My TD5 (Defender 90), when it's been switched off for a while and is cold throws some thick grey/white smoke for a few seconds when I drive off. It only does it for a few seconds, maybe 10 to 15 seconds and then it's ok. Whilst its something...

52 plate TD5 Sump filling with diesel

How would the head crack if I may ask? What conditions would cause it to crack?

Exhaust sound. 200tdi straight thru & side exit.

Nice :) The straight-through makes 'em sound wonderful :)

    Cruising speed

Yeah, 60 or a bit more is a good crusing speed. Mods make it much much smoother at those speeds...

Do tires have a recommended lifetime?

F***ing american influence!! Great, so there's no real consensus on them actually perishing due to age, it's what you do with them that counts, not their age

Do tires have a recommended lifetime?

Mine don't stand much often, they are being worked continuously. They don't have serious tire wear, I think for now they are ok at least, visually they look ok. However, my point is, despite the tires looking ok in my eyes, would they be actually hard or some other lifetime defect and thus...

Do tires have a recommended lifetime?

During a recent conversation, somebody told me that tires typically have a lifetime, after which the rubber hardens and becomes unsuitable, possibly unsafe to use... I've had my tires on the Defender which is mainly used for road use for about 5 years, driving about 6,000 miles per year (not...

    Chip optimization td5 recommended

I did the exhaust before the intercooler / remap. The exhaust makes the turbo lag absolutely minimal, the larger intercooler increases the lag slightly. I have a boost box, but haven't taken the boost higher, it's at 1.2 now. I believe that taking it up to 1.4 would reduce the turbo lag again...

Looks like you got your EGR blanked fairly recently :)

Slightly down on power when warm?

It doesn't really cut power by much, it just feels heavier. When it's cold, it feels like a happy young puppy, all raring to go. When it warms up it feels, mmm, less sprightly. Yeah, heard about the gauge. Once it warms up, it stays in the same place. Only goes up if it hits very bad temps...

    Defender A/C

Don't really need to get my post count up, I'm not selling anything ;) Haven't seen any mice around the fender for a while, so that problem should have been solved :D Just trying to solve an issue really :| Yes it is a RHD, and it seems that what you are saying makes much sense. I don't really...

    Defender A/C

Let me rephrase a previous question I posted. Should all the four vents in the Defender (2001) A/C actually blow the same amount of air?

Slightly down on power when warm?

    That's what I think too ...

Slightly down on power when warm?

Could it all be a question of how warm/hot the engine is and the warmth of the air going into the engine? i.e. when the engine gets warmer, if the exhaust gas temperatures get hotter, does that in turn cause the air going into the engine to be warmed up by the heat in turbo, thus less...

    A/C gripe

So it's summer and the A/C is getting switched on more and more often...I'm in Malta, you can't really live without an A/C. It works fine and everything, it cools when it's supposed to etc. BUT, there are 4 air vents. Out of the 4, 3 just blow a really tiny bit of air, whilst the 4th (which...
