Hi all,

Im new to land rovers and a few weeks ago bought myself my dream car, a defender 52' Reg 90 TD5 with 43,000 on the clock and a FSH, and until now its been running great!

Yesterday when I started it up it kicked out a fairly decent amount of white/grey smoke, I put my right foot down whilst looking in the mirror at the exhaust but the revs did not increase and it appeared to stay at tick over, just lots of white smoke emitting, then after 3-5 seconds of my foot to the floor and lots of white smoke the engine suddenly sputtered, the exhaust cleared and it revved up fine. The truck then drives like normal with no other smoke leaving the exhaust, if left for a short while it starts fine however if left to go cold the problem repeats and if i try to pull away without allowing the problem to clear it will stall.

Anybody have any ideas? Fuel problem?

I don't know whether its worth mentioning but the morning this all started, whilst visiting a friend I parked the truck on a high verge with the drivers side being up in the air and I had a quarter tank of fuel. When I got back in it to leave, my fuel light was on but I just figured this was because of the angle it had been parked on, sure enough after a minute or two the fuel level went back up. Possible I've dragged some sludge from the tank into the system?

Im not a mechanic but have been teaching myself a few bits and bought my 90 with the intention of doing my own servicing etc so is there anything I can try myself that could be an easy obvious fix before I take it to a garage.

Thanks in advance and I appreciate any help or advice,

Joe
