whats the best defender engine ? poll

Some parts for the 200tdi are now made of unobtainium like cylinder heads. The 300 is easier to work on - easier cambelt change for instance. It has a better oil pump and the head is easier to change as the motor is futher forward in the chassis. LT77 gearbox is a load of rubbish IMHO, but...

Very Confused is it a 300tdi or not????

Defender 300tdi engines begin 16L, except mine which is 21L which should be a Disco engine but they are the same anyway. I would be very suspicious of an engine where the engine number has been changed, which yours has. Could be stolen .... The other alternative is that it is a Brazilian-made...

How not to cross a river

From Landrovering, the quarterly glossy mag of the Southern Africa Land Rover club. The vehicle is local.

    is dexron 2 ok

And what you say sounds like bollocks to me. Synthetic oil does not deteriorate with heating and cooling. That's why it costs so much. And as for bits of metal, that's what the magnet is for.

    is dexron 2 ok

The technical bulletin which introduced MTF94 back in 97 or 98 stated that MTF94 could be 'retrofitted' into earlier LT77 and all R380 boxes. I used MTF94 from then until my last change when I switched to Redline MTL which gives an even better gear change and does not ever need to be changed.

TD5 EGR Blanking Plate Fitting - My Tips

Remember to disconnect the vacuum pipe to the EGR switch and block it with a self-tapper else the EGR valve will still open and close and let pressurised air out of the intake manifold. Or better still, throw the EGR switch away. Better still, throw the steel pipe away and even better, change...

TD5 growls a few times after switching off

The noise could be the centrifugal oil filter spinning down. Check your earth leads - it is not uncommon for the handbrake cable to be the only earth left and then it can actually catch fire.

    Cylinder head/valve issues, HELP!

If the gasket is fine it could be a cracked head. You should ideally get it pressure tested. The head bolts are tightened in a specific sequence and should be done to 40Nm followed by 60° + 60°. They must not be retorqued afterwards.

    rust.

We had lots of Hillman Minxes from a 1948 side valve one onwards. The one that fell to bits the worst was one of the last 'square' ones. I remember my dad wanting to adjust the headlights, the screws were solid with rust, he pushed harder and the whole light and surround fell into the wing...

To start, or not to start.......that is the question

Surely the MOT has nothing to do with starter motors? Ok, if your car won't start they can't test it, but I would reckon that if you push started it and told them to test it they can't fail you for a non-safety related mechanical problem. As there are MOT testers on here, they will no doubt...

    rust.

Best way to avoid rust is to live somewhere where it doesn't rain all the time. I have a 1984 Renault 5 and a 1987 Audi 200, both of which live outside and are rust free. My 1995 Defender 110 was built as standard with a galv chassis and should last until the next millenium. The chassis were...

    Best Expedition Land Rover?

I would try to find a very early V8 defender, because of the price of fuel they are cheap. And put an ex-rusty-disco tdi engine and gearbox in it. The best fuel consumption of any Landy engine.

    Brake bleed valve

With Defenders and Discos you don't really need a kit at all - just crack the nipple open and let gravity do the rest. A bit messy though. And to bleed the clutch you just jump on the pedal about 20 times - try it!

Your thoughts on the 2.5td 19j engine??

I have also 'tweaked' quite a few 300tdis, including my own. I would suggest fitting an EGT meter, though. The alarm on mine is set at 725c and I know a couple of places where I can set it off. Normally long uphills taken in 5th. BUT I don't agree with either his description of how to do it...

Your thoughts on the 2.5td 19j engine??

Mate of mines Dad had a TD fitted to his SIIA camper. It had been modified to open up the block a bit to stop overheating here in SA. He was very happy with it until a precombustion chamber dropped into the cylinder when he was on holiday. Made a bit of a mess of the engine, so we put in a...

Defender 90 TD5 Fuel Whine - HELP PLEASE

Having read my own posts, I reckon I am being too pedantic. With a TD5, whatever fixes your problem is the answer. Sometimes running round the vehicle while reciting the Lord's prayer backwards can help :D

Help Required : 200Tdi Defender is 'Juddering'

Handbrake adjusted too tight? But this normally only causes juddering on the overrun. Worth a look though.
