The R380 is a completely new design and they needed a lighter oil and originally specced ATF. However problems arose, and from November 2001 ALL R380 boxes, including existing ones must only use Texaco MTF-94 or equivalent. Do a search on here for the equivalent part numbers fer a lot less money than buying from a main stealer - I've seen the same spec stuff fer under a tenner a litre ;)

well the new haynes spec says:

non TD5: ATF to M2c33
TD5 texaco MTF94

arrrr, hang on. the td5 uses the R380 dont it. so, the haynes is wrong and should say:

LT77: ATF
R380: MTF94

correct?

The technical bulletin which introduced MTF94 back in 97 or 98 stated that MTF94 could be 'retrofitted' into earlier LT77 and all R380 boxes.

I used MTF94 from then until my last change when I switched to Redline MTL which gives an even better gear change and does not ever need to be changed.

does not ever need to be changed.

sounds like bollocks to me . all oil deteriates as it heats up and cools down . not to mention your gearbox wers and tiny particles of metal get in the oil and then it wears like **** . resulting in more overheating and a big bang whilst haring down the motorway.
