    freelander k series lacking power

As the heads just been off I'd guess cam timing is out a notch or two. It's close enough that it's ok for the warm up while the ignition is retarded but no good once it's reached normal.

Series III - Towing 2 Ton?

Look for something that has the salisbury diff. The lighter duty ones pop quite easily (though they are cheap and easy to change when they do).

    88" Air Portable / Lightweight

Mine was standard series III. No modification required. ('74 air portable with a 5 bearing engine).

    Problem with compression

I have had to look at cam timing on my 2.25 (yet), but in general the cam turns once for each two turns of the crank. I assume the 2.25 isn't unusual. If it's set up one turn of the crank out the timing marks will look right, but it will open the exhaust valves instead of the inlets and vice...

    2 1/4 petrol webber problem

Put the choke back in? (the cable is intact and moving the butterfly) Did you set the idle with the engine at running temperature?

    Problem with compression

Does "sounds like no compression" mean it spins very quickly with little apparent resistance? If it's a 24v with the big military starter then this is normal - mine giggles if the batteries are fresh. If you put your hand over the exhaust while trying to start it (long arms or a helper...

Im getting white Smoke from my exhaust

It's difficult if it won't pass emissions test - but has it had a good hard run recently? Something that will burn any residual crud out the exhaust and show up if you're losing oil? As I understand it white smoke is usually stuff burning after combustion chamber (suspect turbo bearing, but it...

    Freelander Faults poll

Try a little plastic-compatible grease (basic lithium should be fine) on the reservoir bottle threads and round the top of the neck (to help you get it all the way on before it gets stiff - the seal is the top of the bottle to the flange in the cap). Tiny seeming steam leaks there add up to...

What's 24 volt petrol 109 like in deep water?

Yep - if you've still got the 24v distributor there's a vent on the side. That said my air portable has been deeper without ill effect, but this may just have been bow wave luck. The plug cables should be fine, but the ones to the coil and the stop down box on top of the rocker cover are rubber...

    L Series surging idle

If all the sensors check out, then it's possible that it's the load on the engine that's changing rather than the input fuel being changed. Anything unusual in the electrical system? It could be a heavy load that is periodically removed causing the engine to surge until the fuel is reduced...

    Freelander Starting Problem

Agree - was scrolling down to say it sounds like it's starter solenoid. Is there a click the key is turned to the start position (you can usually hear the solenoid) before the nothing? Click would be indicative that solenoid is working - so personally I'd try percussive engineering on the...

VCU damper outer ring came off?

It's only fourteen bolts to drop the prop out for now. Once it's out you can separate the the rear from the VCU with one further bolt (hidden in the forks of the UJ) and a bit of levering, and get a new ring/bolts/VCU depending on what's rusted out at you leisure.

Freelander 1.8 K series hgf - more data

I'm keeping a eye out for an cheap one to use as a parts donor for a XEDI. I can't be the only one. If it's got a functional VCU, prop, drive shafts etc. I'm sure people like me will keep propping the value up.

Can amps/model of alternator be assessed?

Don't buy an ammeter to test this - the rating is a peak output not what it will be producing in normal operation. Type is usually on the black plastic at the back - it might be moulded in. Looking at replacements - are you sure 150A is required? The two types I see available are 90A and 105A...

    Frelenader 2l di

It's a surprisingly revvy turbo diesel. Give it a little more right boot, there's not much torque between 1000-2000rpm, so more loud pedal and less time slipping the clutch makes it much smoother (at least in mine).

    Confirmation Needed on Turbo Problem

That doesn't sound like a turbo to me. I've had to (non-LR) engines throw rods recently though and a broken con rod sounds a lot like your describe. It could be a completely disintegrated turbo bearing; best I can think of to test it is to remove the air inlet pipe from the turbo or...

Oil leak from rear diff breather

I'm struggling to understand why the diff rather than the VCU suffered. I'm only a week into Freelander ownership; but I thought it was the VCU that controlled the difference in propshaft speeds and it operated symetrically (i.e. there's resistance in the VCU when the rear prop is going...

K series direct to head throttles

Once you start talking 160bhp+ Caterhams tend to struggle on the cooling and the nearly 4" thick multipass rad is usually used; and that's with rather more straight forward airflow than a Freelander; the 1.8k series in 138bhp tune almost never overheats in the Caterham installation - I gather it...

K series direct to head throttles

Is there clearance to the bulkhead? (Visualises my Caterham's engine bay then my Freelander's - the throttles will be on the back of the engine, the exhaust down the front for a K series?) You'll need a bigger vent to keep the intake air cool, and a new rad. Given a suitable exhaust and a new...
